To support nurses and other healthcare professionals in caring for patients. You will help patients with daily activities and basic clinical tasks to keep them safe, comfortable, and well cared for.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help patients with personal care such as washing, dressing, and using the toilet
  • Support patients with moving around safely (e.g. walking, getting in and out of bed)
  • Take basic measurements such as temperature, pulse, weight, and height
  • Carry out simple tests such as urine tests and assist with taking blood samples (if trained)
  • Prepare patients for examinations or treatments
  • Serve food and drinks, and help patients who need support with eating
  • Make beds, change bed linen, and keep areas clean and tidy
  • Talk to patients and provide comfort and reassurance
  • Follow instructions from nurses and report any concerns about a patient’s condition

Working Conditions

  • Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and nights
  • The role involves standing, walking, and some lifting

Person Specification (Skill, Qualification, Experience)

Qualifications and Training

  • No formal qualifications required
  • NVQ/SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or willingness to work towards it)
  • On-the-job training will be provided

Experience

  • Experience in a care or support role is helpful but not essential
  • Experience working with vulnerable people is an advantage

Skills and Abilities

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills
  • Ability to carry out simple clinical tasks after training
  • Good observation skills to notice changes in patients
