We are currently working with a well-established steel fabrication specialist based in the Widnes area who is looking to strengthen their technical team with the addition of a skilled CAD/CAM Technician / Project Engineer. This is a key position within the business, offering full involvement across both design and production. The successful individual will play a central role in translating customer requirements into accurate, production-ready data while ensuring smooth delivery through the workshop.
The Role: This position combines CAD/CAM programming, project coordination, and client liaison, making it ideal for someone who enjoys variety and technical ownership. You will work closely with both office and workshop teams to ensure fabrication projects are accurately prepared, efficiently programmed, and delivered on time.
- Producing technical drawings using AutoCAD or similar CAD software
- Creating and optimising CNC plasma cutting programs using Fusion 360 (or equivalent CAM/nesting software)
- Translating customer requirements into production-ready files and data
- Managing projects from initial enquiry through to completion
- Preparing quotations, estimates, and material take-offs
- Monitoring job progress through CRM systems and production schedules
- Liaising directly with workshop teams to resolve technical and production issues
- Ordering and sourcing materials to support project timelines
- Supporting continuous improvement in programming efficiency and material usage
About You: The ideal candidate will bring strong technical capability and a practical understanding of fabrication environments. You will have:
- Proven experience in CAD/CAM programming within fabrication or manufacturing
- Strong knowledge of CNC processes, plasma cutting, and G-code
- Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings confidently
- Solid understanding of mechanical engineering and fabrication methods
- Experience managing projects or production workflows independently
- Commercial awareness (estimating, costing, materials planning) is highly desirable
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure
- A proactive, hands-on approach across both office and workshop environments
- Full UK driving licence
- Based within commuting distance of Widnes.
