What the job involves
- Quality at Blue Light Card is evolving. As we grow our engineering capability across web, mobile, data, and platform, we’re building the foundations that will let every squad deliver with genuine confidence, and we’re hiring a Staff Quality Engineer to help shape and drive that work.
- Reporting to the Quality Lead, you’ll work across both quality strategy and hands-on engineering delivery. This is a senior individual contributor role with broad cross-organisational scope.
- You’ll spend the majority of your time hands-on, designing and building the frameworks and tooling that make it easier for every squad to deliver to a consistently high standard, working closely with Staff Engineers, Platform, and Product so that quality is built in from the start, not bolted on at the end.
- It’s a new role, which means you’ll have genuine scope to shape it. Rather than working within one narrow area, you’ll collaborate across the full spectrum of quality, from how we test our mobile apps to how we think about data and AI.

- Work closely with the Quality Lead to translate quality strategy into practice across squads, embedding consistent standards covering unit, integration, contract, functional, E2E, and mobile testing across iOS and Android.
- Collaborate with squads to build and maintain mobile test frameworks for iOS and Android, including functional automation and performance testing, ensuring teams have the tooling and support they need to test confidently across both platforms.
- Create reusable web automation foundations, including reference implementations and shared tooling that give squads a clear, well-supported path to consistent quality across our web stack.
- Shape our performance testing approach, working with teams to define how we measure and validate performance across web and mobile and weaving this into our delivery cadence.
- Stay hands-on in the code, spending at least 50% of your time actively designing, building, and improving test automation and tooling across web, mobile, and other platforms.
- Partner with Platform and Staff Engineers on test environment and test data strategy, defining how environments are provisioned and kept consistent, and how test data is generated, masked, and managed safely.
- Use quality signals including defect escape rates, flakiness trends, coverage, crash rates, and performance metrics to identify where investment will have the greatest impact, sharing findings in a way that resonates with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support and coach engineers across the organisation on quality principles, helping teams understand the reasoning behind shared standards and nurturing a culture where quality is everyone’s responsibility.
