Research Nurse in Sunderland

Exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, committed and disciplined Research Nurse to join the team. You will work across a wide portfolio of clinical trials, predominately in Stroke and Emergency Department, supporting the delivery of high‑quality research and ensuring studies run to time and target. You will provide high‑quality care, guide patients, and be instrumental in implementing study objectives.

Responsibilities

• Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code.
• Supervise, support and educate junior members of the team, acting as a role model.
• Ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.
• Comply with the trust’s vision, values and behavioural compact.
• Develop high‑quality research across the trust’s Acute and Community Services.
• Collaborate with the R&I lead clinician to help develop research infrastructure within the organization.
• Participate in research and audit projects, managing a caseload of study participants – including screening, recruitment, education, monitoring and accurate data collection across outpatient clinics, wards and research office areas.
• Identify and encourage participation in both commercial and non‑commercial studies relevant to the trust.
• Support the implementation of research findings into clinical practice, contributing to staff education and training.
• Coordinate research activity across the trust in multiple specialities.

Job Type

Contract – fixed term, 2 years. Full‑time, Monday‑Friday, 9‑5 pm. Band 6, salary £38,682‑£46,580 per year.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Knowledge of ICH GCP.
• Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships.
• Basic numeracy and literacy skills to Level 1 or equivalent.
• Basic IT skills.
• Current Part 1 NMC registration.
• Degree in clinical specialty or research.
• Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development.
• Knowledge of recent NHS legislation (desirable).
• Understanding of consent processes for research (desirable).
• Awareness of changing trends within health care (desirable).
• Attended GCP training (desirable).
• Awareness of current legislation regarding research governance issues (desirable).
• Knowledge of research ethics and R&D approval processes (desirable).

Experience

• Specialist knowledge or experience in research.
• Experience of collaborating with other agencies.
• Appropriate post‑registration experience as a registered nurse.
• Experience managing staff or projects (desirable).
• Experience providing patient or staff education (desirable).

Skills and Knowledge

• Ability to organise programmes of several clinical trials concurrently.
• Ability to prioritise and coordinate own workload and that of others.
• Ability to work autonomously and as part of a small team and the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Communication skills – verbal (to communicate with clinical colleagues and patients), written (to produce reports), interpersonal (to engage with trial subjects).
• Ability to work across boundaries, integrating with multidisciplinary staff in relation to research trials.
• Computer literate with experience of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Evidence of attention to detail and accuracy in data collection.
• Phlebotomy skills (desirable).
• Ability to develop word processing, report writing and presentation (desirable).
