Band 6 Physiotherapist opportunity with the Community Autism and Learning Disability Service (CALDS). The post is offered as a 12-month fixed term contract or secondment. CALDS focuses on high-quality, personalised support for people with Learning Disabilities and Autism. The role involves contributing to service improvements, pathway development and new models of care within a warm, supportive multidisciplinary team (Nursing, Psychology, Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy). There is a strong emphasis on improving outcomes, reducing health inequalities and delivering high quality care to adults with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism. You will work with experienced clinicians who value collaboration, compassion and continuous improvement.
Main duties of the job:
- Plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the physiotherapy service for adult clients with autism and/or learning disability with complex needs, across settings including day services, residential settings and the client’s home; assess, diagnose, prioritise, treat and discharge patients autonomously.
- Work as a member of the Community Autism and Learning Disabilities Service (CALDS), contributing to multi-disciplinary teamwork to address the needs of referred adults and manage a delegated caseload.
- Collaborate with other specialist services within Autism and Learning Disabilities to meet physiotherapy needs of adult clients.
- Support and consult on complex transitions (e.g., new home environments, leaving school, admission/discharge from inpatient services).
- Participate in service developments and audits as directed by the Appropriate Lead.
- Actively participate in supervision, competency development and CPD activities.
- Provide training and advice to carers and colleagues; supervise junior staff or support workers where appropriate.
- Work across multiple community settings to ensure physiotherapy is delivered where it best supports independence, wellbeing and quality of life.
This post is subject to enhanced DBS disclosure and requires a valid driving licence with access to a vehicle to meet the role’s requirements.
Person Specification
Experience
- Essential: Experience of working in a community setting; Experience of multi-disciplinary working.
- Desirable: Experience working with adults with learning disabilities and autistic people; Experience of group work with those who have a learning disability; Experience of supervising and appraising junior staff and students.
Skills/Attributes/Knowledge
- Essential: Sound knowledge of physiotherapy practice including management of chronic conditions, spasticity, postural management, gait analysis, specialist seating and wheelchair provision, orthotic provision; Knowledge of current best practice in physiotherapy; Well developed written and spoken communication skills; Understanding of team dynamics and professional ethics; Knowledge of clinical governance principles; Excellent personal organisational skills; ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance; Health, safety and risk awareness.
- Desirable: Member of clinical interest groups; Networking skills to maintain awareness of best practice regionally and nationally; Advanced IT skills.
Physical Requirements
- Essential: Car driver and ability to meet travel requirements of the post; Moving and handling abilities.
Qualifications
- Essential: Degree in Physiotherapy; CSP Registration; HCPC Registration.
- Desirable: Postgraduate training in spasticity management, postural management, orthotic provision and advanced moving and handling; Clinical supervisor qualification for student placements.
