The Senior Academic Lead is the senior academic owner for a designated subject division. The role is responsible for the quality, consistency, growth and commercial success of all academic provision within that subject area, including student outcomes, curriculum strategy, teaching standards, tutor performance, recruitment, training and programme development. This is a senior leadership position focused on building and scaling a high-performing subject team, ensuring excellent student experiences and driving the subject area forward as a strategic business unit.

Responsibilities

  • Subject Area Ownership & Student Outcomes
    • Take overall responsibility for students within the designated subject area, ensuring clear academic planning, effective teaching provision and measurable progression.
    • Be accountable for student progress, university admissions outcomes, retention, parent satisfaction and overall student experience.
    • Act as the senior escalation point for complex academic cases, family concerns and high-stakes admissions decisions.
    • Monitor academic data and feedback, identifying risks and implementing interventions where required.
    • Maintain consistent academic quality and student support across all tutors, Academic Leads and programmes.
  • Teaching, Academic Mentoring & Admissions Expertise
    • Deliver outstanding teaching and academic mentoring for high-achieving students targeting Oxbridge, Ivy League and other competitive universities.
    • Provide specialist admissions guidance, including admissions tests, personal statements, written work, interviews and scholarship applications.
    • Serve as the final academic reviewer for high-priority applications and student cases.
    • Maintain expert knowledge of university admissions requirements, subject curricula and competitive selection processes.
  • Curriculum Strategy & Programme Development
    • Own the academic vision, curriculum strategy and pedagogical framework for the subject division.
    • Design and continuously improve curricula, enrichment programmes, assessments, resources and intervention models.
    • Ensure academic programmes remain rigorous, scalable and aligned with leading university admissions standards.
    • Use student outcomes, feedback and market insight to improve programme quality and effectiveness.
  • Team Leadership & Performance Management
    • Lead and manage Academic Leads and Tutors within the subject area.
    • Set expectations, objectives and performance standards aligned with Blue Education's academic and service standards.
    • Conduct performance reviews, lesson observations, coaching and feedback sessions.
    • Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
    • Support succession planning and address capability gaps where necessary.
  • Recruitment, Onboarding & Training
    • Lead recruitment, selection and onboarding of academic staff.
    • Define subject-specific hiring standards and evaluation criteria.
    • Design and deliver training programmes, teaching frameworks and quality guidelines.
    • Ensure all staff understand Blue Education's teaching standards, student management processes and admissions methodology.
  • Academic Quality Assurance
    • Establish and monitor subject-level KPIs covering progress, teaching quality, reporting standards, admissions outcomes, retention and satisfaction.
    • Implement quality assurance processes across teaching delivery, curriculum implementation and student support.
    • Review academic records and performance data to ensure consistency and excellence.
    • Lead subject review meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Family Communication & Educational Consulting
    • Build trusted relationships with students and families, particularly in complex or high-value cases.
    • Provide strategic educational consulting and long-term academic planning.
    • Support staff in managing sensitive communications and progression concerns.
    • Ensure communication remains professional, timely and commercially aware.
  • Business Growth & Strategic Contribution
    • Partner with senior leadership to develop and deliver growth strategies for the subject division.
    • Contribute to retention, programme expansion, referrals and premium academic services.
    • Identify market opportunities, emerging student needs and new programme ideas.
    • Support sales, marketing, partnerships, workshops and thought leadership initiatives.
  • External Representation & Brand Building
    • Represent Blue Education through school partnerships, webinars, seminars and public speaking engagements.
    • Strengthen the company's academic reputation through content creation and strategic initiatives.
    • Monitor developments in education, admissions and curriculum trends, translating insights into improvements across programmes and services.

Qualifications And Competencies

  • Academic Credentials
    • Graduate, Master's or PhD degree from Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College, Ivy League, or an equivalent top global university.
    • Outstanding subject expertise and the credibility to lead a team of high-calibre academics and advise ambitious families.
  • Teaching & Admissions Experience
    • Minimum 1,500+ hours of teaching, tutoring or academic mentoring experience, ideally with high-achieving and university-bound students.
    • Proven track record supporting students applying to Oxbridge, Ivy League or other competitive university programmes.
    • Demonstrated ability to diagnose student needs, design targeted learning plans and improve academic outcomes.
    • Experience handling complex or high-stakes student cases, including admissions strategy, interviews, written work and subject-specific preparation.
    • Minimum 2–3 years of people management or academic team leadership experience within education, tutoring, schools, higher education, admissions consulting or a related sector.
    • Proven ability to lead, motivate and engage teams to achieve excellent performance.
    • Experience recruiting, onboarding, training and developing teachers, tutors or academic staff.
    • Confidence setting standards, giving feedback, managing performance and holding team members accountable.
  • Curriculum, Quality & Programme Leadership
    • Experience designing curricula, academic pathways, assessments, teaching resources or enrichment programmes.
    • Strong understanding of academic quality assurance, student progress tracking and teaching excellence frameworks.
    • Ability to translate educational insight into scalable processes, training materials and commercially viable academic products.
  • Commercial & Strategic Capability
    • Commercial acumen with evidence of measurable contribution to business growth, student retention, programme development, referrals, partnerships or premium service delivery.
    • Entrepreneurial mindset and ability to identify opportunities that take the subject area and wider business forward.
    • Comfortable working with senior leadership on planning, priorities, resourcing and strategic initiatives.
