Role Overview

We’re recruiting a Pet Welfare Assistant for on‑site animal care, for our Rehoming & Fostering team in Thirsk. As a Pet Welfare Assistant for our onsite services, you'll play an important role in our mission, ensuring that every pet receives the love, attention, and support they deserve during their stay at our Thirsk rehoming centre.

Core Responsibilities

  • Prepare pets for the rehabilitation and adoption stages, including carrying out assessments and rehabilitation plans.
  • Ensure welfare standards are met and rehabilitation plans are followed.
  • Carry out meetings with owners giving up their pets, record information, complete paperwork and assess pets for behavioural or veterinary problems.
  • Provide additional in‑person or virtual advice and practical demonstrations to new owners, in collaboration with the Adoptions Coordinator.
  • On‑site accommodation for pets is available 24/7; occasionally carry out night checks or stay overnight when required.
  • Drive company vehicles to transport pets; requires a current full driving licence.

Working Pattern

This part‑time role is 15 hours per week on a rota. Typical schedule: Week 1 – Tuesday, Saturday; Week 2 – Sunday, Tuesday. Weekend and public holiday work may be required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience of working or volunteering with domestic animals or in an animal welfare environment.
  • Experience in a customer‑focused environment and a track record of achieving high customer satisfaction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills, including use of computerised systems.
  • Current full driving licence.
  • Ability to assess pets’ behavioural needs and have basic knowledge of medication use.
  • Self‑motivated, forward‑thinking, collaborative, and able to communicate with clients and stakeholders.
  • Resilience and emotional intelligence to cope in an emotionally charged environment.

Preferred (but not essential)

  • Qualification or experience in animal behaviour or animal training.
  • Experience with cash handling.
  • Experience working to strict health and safety procedures.
  • Understanding of safeguarding issues.
