Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Marine Fiberglass/Composite/Paint Technician to join our team. This role is responsible for performing repairs and refinishing work on fiberglass, carbon fiber, metal, and composite structures, as well as applying paint and protective coatings to vessels. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in marine repair, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results.
Key Responsibilities:
Fiberglass & Composite Work:
- Repair and fabricate fiberglass, carbon fiber, and composite components, including hulls, decks, superstructures, and other vessel parts.
- Perform structural repairs, lamination, and gelcoat application.
- Sand, grind, and prepare surfaces for repair or refinishing.
- Mix and apply resins, epoxies, and other composite materials to repair or strengthen structures.
- Inspect and test completed repairs for structural integrity and aesthetic quality.
Painting & Coating:
- Prepare surfaces for painting through sanding, blasting, or chemical treatments.
- Apply primers, paints, topcoats, and specialty coatings to vessels using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment.
- Ensure all coatings are applied evenly and adhere to manufacturer specifications and quality standards.
- Perform touch-ups, blending, and final finishing work for a flawless appearance.
- Inspect finished work for quality, uniformity, and adherence to client expectations.
General Responsibilities:
- Work with other technicians and trades, such as electricians and mechanics, to coordinate repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Follow all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and handling of hazardous materials.
- Maintain and operate equipment, including sprayers, sanders, and grinders, ensuring tools are clean and in good working condition.
- Keep accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on each project.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, project managers, and clients to provide updates on progress and address any issues.
- Assist with other marine maintenance tasks as needed, including cleaning and inspecting vessels.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fiberglass, composite, or marine painting work.
- Strong knowledge of fiberglass and composite materials, repair techniques, and lamination processes.
- Proficiency in using tools and equipment for fiberglass repair and painting, including spray guns, sanders, and grinders.
- Familiarity with marine coatings, gelcoat repair, and fairing techniques.
- Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality craftsmanship.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and repair specifications.
- Physical stamina and the ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, or in various weather conditions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and recommend effective repair solutions.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in a marine or industrial environment.
- Certifications in fiberglass/composite repair or marine painting are a plus (e.g., ABYC, NACE, or equivalent).
