Bloxham School is seeking a talented, committed and enthusiastic Teacher of English to join our vibrant and forward-thinking English Department. This is an excellent opportunity for an inspiring classroom practitioner who is passionate about literature, language and teaching young people, and who wishes to contribute fully to the academic and wider life of a thriving independent boarding and day school. The role involves teaching English across the 11-18 age range, delivering engaging and challenging lessons that inspire curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. You will work collaboratively with colleagues to support high academic standards while nurturing students' confidence, well-being and love of learning.

Key responsibilities

  • Planning and delivering high-quality, engaging English lessons tailored to students of differing abilities.
  • Creating a positive, inclusive and supportive classroom environment.
  • Monitoring and tracking student progress, using assessment data to inform teaching and intervention.
  • Providing timely, constructive feedback in line with whole-school policies.
  • Managing behaviour effectively and consistently in accordance with school expectations.
  • Supporting a tutor group within a boarding or day house and contributing to weekly pastoral duties.
  • Contributing to the broader curriculum through trips, activities and school events.
  • Working collaboratively within the English Department and across the wider academic community.

The Person

We are looking for a teacher who combines strong subject knowledge with warmth, creativity and high professional standards.

Essential:

  • Degree-level qualification in English or a related subject.
  • Experience teaching English from ages 11-18.
  • Strong subject and curriculum knowledge.
  • Ability to plan and deliver engaging lessons that promote progress and enthusiasm for learning.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Confident use of IT to enhance teaching, assessment and administration.

Desirable:

  • PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification (or working towards).
  • Ability to offer a second subject.
  • Experience using ICT innovatively in the classroom.
  • Awareness of current educational initiatives and developments.

Working Arrangements

Full Time, Term Time Only/All year. Bloxham School is a thriving school with a warm and friendly staff community. Our school day starts at 8.30 am and finishes at 6pm Monday to Friday. Academic lessons end at 3.30pm after which our staff contribute to broader curricular activities, academic drop-ins and pastoral meetings. Saturday lessons are from 8.30am -12.00. The pastoral service we offer at Bloxham School matters hugely to us and therefore all teachers are tutors. If you are a senior tutor, you will be expected to carry out one evening duty per week in their boarding house from 6.45-10.00pm and if a junior tutor, once a fortnight from 6pm-9pm.
