Do you want to work on innovative promotional campaigns for the books and thinkers shaping contemporary debate across the humanities? Are you an experienced books marketer ready to take your next step and make some of a global academic publisher’s flagship brands and authors your own? We would love to hear from you. This is a chance to market one of academic publishing’s most respected philosophy lists, home to leading thinkers including Slavoj Žižek and Rosi Braidotti, the Bloomsbury Studies in Continental Philosophy series, and acclaimed reference works across ethics, aesthetics, political theory and the history of ideas. You’ll promote these alongside the prestigious T&T Clark Biblical Studies and Theology imprint and our cutting‑edge Religious Studies list, working on titles read and taught around the world, from religion and the environment to gender and sexuality, and representations of Mary Magdalene in art.

Reporting into a Senior Marketing Manager, you will use the full marketing mix and work closely with the Sales, Editorial and Digital Resources teams to create awareness and generate sales for titles ranging from general interest and course books through to research and reference works, and by high‑profile authors including Carol J. Adams, Alain Badiou, Mary Midgley, and Karl Barth.

Role

  • Develop and implement the marketing strategy, spend and budget for the philosophy list and three religion lists — theology, biblical studies and religious studies — across print, ebook and audiobook formats.
  • Devise and deliver all aspects of marketing plans for the lists, including but not limited to: email marketing; web marketing and SEO; social media; print and online advertising (including PPC); review copy outreach; academic conferences and events; author care; and sales materials and support.
  • Collaborate closely with a US marketing counterpart on marketing strategy, tactical plans and author care.
  • Work closely with Editorial, Sales and Bloomsbury Digital Resources teams – including Theology and Religion Online (TARO) and the Bloomsbury Philosophy Library – to deliver results‑driven, creative campaigns that drive adoptions, usage, engagement, brand recognition and sales across print and digital.
  • Partner with external organisations, such as scholarly societies, to extend reach and visibility.
  • Improve online discoverability by optimising marketing copy and metadata.
  • Play a part in exciting departmental projects and initiatives such as cross‑list campaigns, author newsletters, the Bloomsbury Academic blog and more.

Knowledge, skills and experience

These are the things we think will help you thrive in the role. If you don’t tick every box but bring enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, we still want to hear from you!

  • Demonstrable marketing experience, ideally within academic publishing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with experience of building and maintaining relationships both internally and externally, demonstrating a positive attitude and diplomacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation, and a good eye for detail.
  • Excellent organisational, multi‑tasking and time management skills; able to work across large volume of titles/authors.
  • Hands‑on experience of organising or assisting with all or most of the following:
    • Budgeting, planning and monitoring spend.
    • Digital marketing across email, web, social media and PPC.
    • Optimising marketing activities through analysis and A/B testing.
    • Conferences – attending, planning, producing booklists and organising inserts.
    • Proofreading and copywriting.

Nice to have

  • A good understanding of recent developments in higher education and the publishing industry.
  • Familiarity with academic adoption sales cycles.
