We are seeking a skilled and proactive General Maintenance Person to join our team. This role involves ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of our facilities through a variety of maintenance tasks. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently. This position offers an opportunity to utilise your skills.

Duties Accountability: Under the direct supervision and responsibility of the Home Manager.

Overview: To provide efficient and effective support to the Nursing Home including ensuring the security, general appearance and upkeep of the buildings and surrounding areas (including the gardens and garages etc) and equipment are maintained in accordance with the required standards. The Handy Person will be expected to observe safe working practices and follow all the Home's health and safety policies whilst carrying out the required duties. It is expected the Handy Person will be able to proceed on jobs instructed by the Manager without supervision so it is imperative the Handy Person has initiative and is resourceful in finding solutions to problems and tasks identified at the Nursing Home.

The role involves (but is not limited to) carrying out the following activities:

  • Ensure all equipment is working efficiently & clean in appearance. Make any adjustments as necessary and report defects and malfunctions to the Home Manager on a regular basis.
  • Be responsible for maintaining the security of the premises and its contents in accordance with the Home's requirements.
  • Painting rooms, corridors and any other areas that require attention.
  • Carry out regular checks and audits as instructed by the Home Manager.
  • To be able to complete electrical repairs/enhancements, add sockets/switches, etc within a safe and proper manner ensuring Health and Safety policies and procedures are followed at all times.
  • To arrange to clear blockages, remove foreign matter from sinks, toilets, drains, kitchen grease traps etc. and clean up spillages as required.
  • Ensure gullies, drains etc. are kept free from debris and that the grounds at Hayes Park Nursing Home are litter free.
  • To be responsible for ensuring clear and safe public access to the Home, particularly in adverse weather conditions (e.g. clearing the snow, gritting etc.).
  • To dispose of waste materials in a safe, hygienic manner ensuring that it is available for collections as required.
  • To undertake porterage tasks as required including setting up and clearing away furniture and equipment.
  • To undertake joinery tasks as required (i.e. maintenance of fixtures and fittings, e.g. tightening screws on window hinges, maintenance of door handles, minor repairs on furniture).
  • Plumbing - e.g. unblocking sinks, traps and waste pipes. Adjustment and replace washers as required on taps. Fixing/Adjusting shower heads or taps as and when necessary.
  • To monitor stock levels of consumable items such as grit, light bulbs/tubes, fuel for lawnmower etc. and arrange to have these items replenished with the Home Manager.
  • To maintain appropriate records including intruder alarm logbook, general Handy Person handbook, repair orders and heating system records, carry out meter readings, checking and testing fire alarms, the security system, outside security lights and water and room temperatures in all rooms throughout the Home.
  • Drilling and fitting shelves, soap dispensers, etc to walls.
  • To report emergencies in the case of faults with gas, electric and water supply to the Home Manager or where not immediately the Assistant Manager or nurse in charge, and report minor faults on site to the Home Manager.
  • To attend to, where necessary, personnel visiting the site such as contractors and to be respectful and polite to everyone.
  • To clean windows and other glass within the limitations of safe working practices. Clean light fittings and maintain them to a safe standard.
  • To comply with the requirements of Health and Safety, other relevant legislation and policies at Hayes Park Nursing Home. Carry out a Fire Alarm Test weekly and assist with evacuation procedures.
  • Checking and replacing blown bulbs, dead batteries, sockets, etc.
  • Oil all door locks and hinges, check and repair door handles and anything else needing similar maintenance.
  • Cleaning litter from the grounds and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness internally and externally.
  • Manage and maintain the radiators, i.e. bleeding radiators, replace broken/frozen pipes, etc.
  • Take and record temperature of the hot water in all rooms and adjust the valve as required.
  • Remove heavy items from the buildings to the bins/skips for disposal.
  • Complete all gardening duties regularly to ensure the proper appearance of the home.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties within the overall functions of the job or requirements of the home.
