Overview

Painters are responsible for site preparation, colour matching, surface preparation and applying paint and other finishes to walls, ceilings, furniture and other surfaces. A painter and decorator uses various tools and materials to improve the texture and appearance of surfaces. You will need to paint interior and exterior surfaces using varnishes, paint, wall fabrics, stains or sealers. It can also require the preparation of walls and surfaces by plastering, removing old paint, sandpapering or adding filler.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritise occupational health, safety, and environmental compliance to protect the well-being of oneself and others, promptly reporting any non-compliance.
  • Adhere to current building regulations, quality standards, and work instructions while performing tasks.
  • Prepare the work site, including layout and material, tool, and equipment selection.
  • Conduct minor repairs or modifications on completed surfaces
  • Understand different paint types and their application
  • Strip off old wallpaper and layers of paint
  • Mix paint to the right shade, often using computerised colour matching equipment
  • Add special finishes such as stains, varnishes or marbling
  • Using specialist tools such as spray guns
  • Using techniques such as mist coats and cutting-in
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, such as clients, customers, and other construction trades.
  • Disposing of waste responsibly and sustainably.
  • Handle materials safely and efficiently, including receiving, unloading, moving, lifting, and storing them on-site to prevent injury or damage.

Typical Working Week: 40 hours p/w with start time typically between 07:00 & 08:00 inclusive of 8 hours at college.

  • Proactive approach, taking pride in their work and taking accountability for decisions.
  • A love of variety in a role and ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced working environment
  • Ability to quickly prioritise tasks and the initiative to dive head-first into problem solving
  • No two days are the same on the front line and not every day goes to plan, so youll need to be quick on your feet to respond!
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and enjoy working with multiple teams
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information and effectively communicate this to different team members and audiences
  • Ability to visit different sites and training days
  • Curiosity to learn quickly in a reactive and dynamic working environment.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions to serve our customers and protect the environment
  • Able to understand and follow health and safety protocols
  • Must be a Tower Hamlets Resident

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: English and Maths at GCSE Grade 3 / D or above, or Functional Skills at Entry 3 or above. Must live in the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham

Desired Requirements: The passion and commitment to become fully qualified in Painting & Decorating. It would be advantageous if you have already completed technical certificates in construction or multi-skills, have previous related work experience and a CSCS, but this is certainly not essential.

Key Training / College Information

K10 will enrol you to the Level 2 Painter & Decorator course and fund your qualifications through an accredited training provider.

The apprenticeship duration is 24 months.
