Blarney Castle & Gardens is seeking an experienced and passionate Head Gardener to lead the care, development, and preservation of our historic gardens and landscapes. This role offers the opportunity to oversee one of Ireland’s most iconic garden environments, combining heritage conservation with innovative horticultural practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the gardening team responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of the castle grounds and gardens.
- Develop and implement seasonal planting schemes, landscape improvements, and long-term horticultural plans.
- Ensure the health and presentation of trees, lawns, ornamental beds, water features, and woodland areas.
- Oversee plant procurement, propagation, and sustainable garden management practices.
- Manage garden maintenance schedules, tools, machinery, and budget allocation.
- Collaborate with estate management on conservation initiatives and visitor experience improvements.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience in a senior gardening or horticultural leadership role.
- Formal qualification in horticulture, landscape management, or a related field (preferred).
- Strong knowledge of plant care, soil management, pest control, and seasonal garden planning.
- Experience managing historic or heritage landscapes is an advantage.
- Excellent team leadership, organisation, and communication skills.
