We have a new opportunity for an experienced Tax & Trust Adviser within our Trust Management and Advisory Team – part of our highly regarded Succession and Tax Practice Group. The role will ideally suit someone with extensive knowledge and experience within Trust Management - potentially gained from working within a Finance organisation or Trust company. You will work with our Trust Manager, Tax Technicians and other members of our Succession and Tax Team to support our partners in advising our various trustee (both professional and lay) clients.
We have a wide client base and broad geographic reach, and the position presents a great opportunity for someone with expansive knowledge of Tax and Trusts to develop and apply their expertise within the framework of a legal firm. Our wider Succession and Tax Practice Group provides advice on the full range of private client matters including estate planning, Wills and advisory, Court of Protection, Estate Administration and Trust Management.
We adopt smart working practices with a typical week involving 2 or 3 days in the office - and the balance remote. We are happy to consider candidates who require part-time or reduced hours (minimum of 30 hours per week). The successful candidate may be based out of our Cardiff, London, Southampton or Oxford office.
Typical WorkloadYou can expect a mix of trust advisory and supervision of administration work carried out by other team members. Your responsibilities might include but not be limited to:
- Ad hoc trust advisory work, such as advising trustees and beneficiaries on: trust distributions; tax planning for trustees and beneficiaries (IHT and CGT); planning for trusts nearing the end of the trust period; trust no longer fulfilling their purpose; winding up trusts, implementing planning together with other members of our Succession and Tax Practice Group.
- Charitable Trusts working in conjunction with our specialist Charities advisory team.
- Monitoring deadlines on trusts such as ten yearly charges and beneficial entitlements.
- Trust Accounting (with support from others in the team).
- Inheritance Tax returns for trusts.
- Supporting our Trust Manager and Trust paralegal with matters arising from routine trust administration.
- Supporting our Tax technicians with the implementation of particular tax/trust related projects – e.g. TRS.
- Assisting in the training and mentoring of junior members of staff and assisting our partners with disseminating technical trust know-how and team knowledge.

Skills / Experience Required- A suitable professional qualification – e.g. Solicitor, Cilex, STEP, ATT or CTA.
- Significant experience (5 years+) of working in a private client or trust department in a client facing role.
- Ability to work accurately, prioritise work and adhere to critical deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels.
- Proactive and able to raise challenge in the interests of achieving the best outcome for the client.
- Confident and personable.
- Strong client and matter management skills.
- IT proficient.
- Exceptional self-motivation and ability to assume responsibility for your own matters.
