Most food is still good to eat or cook at the expiry date, because the dates are chosen to cover a worst-case scenario. That’s great for quality and safety, but leads to a huge amount of waste. We believe food should tell you how fresh it is, and in 10 years the world will not be wasting food because of a fixed printed date.
We replace use‑by dates and shelf‑life testing with smart labels that measure spoilage gas, and AI that predicts the remaining days of freshness. We invented this technology as scientists from Imperial College London, and we\'re using it to improve the whole supply chain, from food producers to households, and reduce the huge amounts of waste caused by the 50‑year‑old system of destructive testing and printed expiry dates.
We’ve recently signed major food‑industry customers and raised £5m investment. Do you want to become BlakBear\'s food technical leader as we rapidly expand?
💼 The Role
- Own a seamless onboarding and training process for food technical teams, to ensure a great experience using BlakBear on manufacturing sites and in supply‑chain.
- Build strong relationships with food technical teams to support and expand their journey with BlakBear.
- Help improve BlakBear’s product to be lightyears better than legacy methods, such as microbiological testing and temperature logging.
- Help build food‑industry trust in a cutting edge new technology.
- Work in our London office Monday‑Friday, with customer site visits around the UK and availability to join calls with our US customers.
Must-haves:
- 5‑10 years in food manufacturing/retail in a technical/NPD role covering meat, fish, poultry or meals products.
- Good understanding food science, shelf‑life testing and microbial spoilage.
- Good knowledge retailer codes of practice, regulations and testing methods.
- Desire to work in a customer‑facing role.
- Great interpersonal skills to build conviction and trust in new technology.
- Ability to run meetings and handle objections.
- Ability to present technical data persuasively to customers and conferences.
- Desire to transition into cutting edge technology involving sensors and AI.
- Writing skills: Write thought‑leading articles for our website and trade press.
We\'d like you to be our expert in food technical, with a fast‑growing career towards a leadership role, with potential for significant shareholding in the company. You\'ll also help expedite the transition to digital use‑by dates, and the future of food manufacture and retail.
