To undertake ultrasound lists autonomously, report independently on ultrasound examinations and communicate findings to referring clinician – the range and type of examination dependent on experience/competency, and maintain high clinical and professional standards. To identify and research best practice. To work closely with the manager to help management and planning of an efficient ultrasound service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and effectively operate ultrasound equipment, adhering to British Medical Ultrasound (BMUS) guidelines.
  • Ensure high professional standards throughout the department, regarding patient care, technical quality and appearance.
  • Assist with development and implementation of guidelines, policies and protocols in line with strategic, political and professional requirements.
  • Demonstrate political and strategic awareness, implement innovative audit and initiate change.
  • Adopt a flexible approach to working patterns to meet service needs.
  • Recognise and respond sensitively and appropriately to individual patients' needs.
  • Take on extra roles as required, and as training and development allow; exercise professional self‑regulation considering the limitations of self and the practice of other multidisciplinary team members.
  • Co‑ordinate, manage and monitor own work lists independently.
  • Facilitate adherence to self‑regulatory frameworks across the service/organisation.
  • Assist with equipment servicing and management of breakdowns.
  • Adopt a proactive approach to Clinical Governance, Clinical Incident Reporting and identifying/reporting possible risk.
  • Use the Clinical Incident Reporting procedure correctly to raise awareness of irregularities in standards of clinical practice.
  • Assist with Risk Assessments as required.
  • Formulate, update and implement departmental ultrasound procedures and policies.
  • Adhere to departmental scanning protocols and reporting methods to minimise possible errors.
  • Adhere to all Trust policies, guidelines and procedures.
  • Assist in the investigation of Clinical incidents.
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the workplace.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control policy and procedures.
  • Reflect on and learn from relevant research evidence, policies and legislation, and apply across professional and organisational boundaries; share information gained through CPD to influence practice.
  • Initiate changes to practice through evidence‑based research.

Essential Criteria

  • Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (DMU) or PgD in Diagnostic Ultrasound or another equivalent ultrasound qualification.
  • Attended courses, conferences and further professional qualifications.
  • Advanced computer skills, with a working knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Demonstrated extensive clinical knowledge of ultrasound scanning techniques and appropriate technology in multiple areas.
  • Extensive experience in reporting ultrasound examinations and relevant patient management; ability to report advanced cases.
  • Experience in teaching and assessing individuals in a range of subjects.
  • Car driver due to need to visit other hospital sites.
