Dispensing Assistant – Independent Opticians
Location: South London
Salary: £32k –£37k depending on experience
Contract: Full-time, permanent
No Sundays or Bank Holidays | One Saturday off each month
BlackSquare is recruiting an experienced Dispensing Assistant for a well-established independent optical and hearing care practice in South London. The practice offers a modern, boutique-style environment, an excellent selection of eyewear and a friendly, collaborative working atmosphere. Personalised patient care is central to the business, with the team focused on providing a professional service rather than a high-volume retail experience. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced optical professional who wants to develop their career within a respected independent practice.
The Role
Working as part of the dispensing team and under the supervision of a qualified Dispensing Optician or Optometrist, you will help provide patients with a professional and enjoyable experience throughout their visit. You will act as the important link between the consulting room and the dispensing process, ensuring each patient receives appropriate advice, products and ongoing support. Your responsibilities will include:
- Welcoming patients and delivering consistently excellent customer service
- Participating in three-way handovers between the Optometrist, patient and dispensing team
- Helping patients select comfortable and well-fitting frames
- Making appropriate lens and lens-treatment recommendations
- Taking precise dispensing measurements using digital equipment where appropriate
- Performing focimetry and checking existing lens specifications
- Monitoring spectacle orders and liaising with laboratories, suppliers and patients
- Quality checking, fitting and adjusting completed spectacles
- Carrying out minor spectacle and hearing-aid repairs
- Supporting patient pre-screening and wider practice duties when required
- Maintaining accurate clinical and administrative records
- Processing financial transactions securely and accurately
- Responding to patient questions and resolving concerns professionally
- Maintaining attractive displays and a clean, welcoming practice environment
- Working within your level of competence and seeking support from qualified colleagues when appropriate
About You
Previous spectacle-dispensing experience is essential for this position. You will also be:
- Confident assisting patients with frame and lens choices
- Passionate about providing excellent customer service
- Friendly, professional and approachable
- Comfortable working within a busy practice environment
- Accurate and attentive when taking measurements and completing records
- Organised, dependable and able to manage competing priorities
- Confident using standard IT systems, including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Enthusiastic about learning and developing new skills
- Adaptable and comfortable working within an evolving role
- A Level 3 Optical Assistant qualification would be desirable, although relevant practical experience will also be considered.
