Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, with services covering the local authority areas of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Trust is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) supporting a population of around 1.6 million people. We have three main hospitals providing acute services to around 330,000 local residents and employ over 7000 people from 68 different countries.

The Lancashire Cardiac Centre is a tertiary cardiac provider for the people of Lancashire & Cumbria. The centre has well-established invasive and non-invasive services covering a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including:

  • Cardiac angiography & intervention
  • Device implants & follow-ups
  • Electrophysiology (EP) simple and complex
  • Echocardiography

Due to vacancy, an opportunity has arisen to recruit a Band 6 Cardiac Physiologist in the Cardiac Investigations Unit. Candidates should have good experience in cardiology procedures and be willing to progress their career in either Pacing and Electrophysiology or Echocardiography.

Main duties of the job include:

  • Working autonomously as a competent practitioner within the CIU department.
  • Conducting specialised cardiac investigations such as diagnostic and interventional cardiology, permanent pacemaker implants & follow-up, and routine non-invasive investigations.
  • Participating in an out of hours on-call service for emergencies.
  • Developing knowledge & skills in a specialist area of cardiac rhythm management or echocardiography.

To be technically proficient as an independent practitioner in basic and specialist invasive and non-invasive cardiology procedures, this includes:

  • Diagnostics angiography – Monitoring and recording of cardiac physiological measurements during the procedure.
  • Interventional angiography – Monitoring and recording of cardiac physiological measurements for a clinical report.
  • Permanent pacemaker implantation – Recording accurate lead function tests to guide secure implantation of cardiac pacing leads.
  • Routine implantable device follow-up – Working independently to record accurate lead function tests.
  • Analysis of 12 lead ECG & ambulatory ECG recordings producing a factual report.
  • Exercise Stress Testing & Cardiopulmonary Exercise services – Producing a technical report of the accurate recordings obtained.
  • Tilt testing – Monitoring and recording cardiac physiological measurement throughout the procedure.
  • Participation in the on-call rota for PPCI, Emergency angiography & interventional cardiology, pacemaker implantation & implantable device checks.
  • Supervision and training of junior staff in all aspects of invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures.

Person specification:

  • BSc Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
  • Active Membership of one of the following: British Cardiac Society (BCS), Society of Cardiological Technicians (SCST), Voluntary Registered with RCCP.
  • Immediate Life Support or Advanced Life Support (within last 12 months).
  • IBHRE Exam in Pacing +/- EP and/or HRUK exam in Pacing/EP.
  • Competent to perform full range Invasive and Non-Invasive procedures.
  • Good IT knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and database input.
  • Ability to work accurately to a reasonable deadline.
  • Dynamic, enthusiastic team worker.
  • Knowledge of national professional and NHS guidelines relating to service provision and quality.
