Blackpool Orthoptic Department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital is seeking an experienced Orthoptist to join the Hospital Eye Service. This role is not suitable for newly qualified Orthoptists.
Responsibilities
- Provide high quality, comprehensive orthoptic services within the Ophthalmology directorate.
- Manage own clinic workload and support other staff.
- Assess, diagnose and manage all cases of ocular motility defects, providing specialist advice to consultants and other health professionals.
- Perform orthoptic investigations and diagnostics, including history, examinations and tests such as Visual Field tests.
- Produce individualised treatment plans and adjust them to achieve best clinical outcomes.
- Lead discussions about surgical decisions, perform pre‑ and post‑operative measurements, assist in adjustable sutures and manage paediatric eye surgery examinations.
- Interpret glasses prescriptions, perform Visual Field tests and manage patient administration including records and summary letters.
- Participate in teaching other health professionals and in visual and vision screening services for children.
- Maintain accurate patient records in Medisight and provide summary letters to optometrists, GPs and other professionals.
- Manage community clinics, SEN screening and support for special schools, and maintain clinical equipment and supplies.
- Handle administrative duties, including workload management, equipment recommendations and clinical audit submission.
- Engage in appraisal, personal development, reflective practice and professional development activities.
- Act as a role model, promote the Orthoptic profession and maintain HCPC registration.
- Work within flexible patterns including part‑time, self‑rostering, compressed hours, annualised hours, term‑time, reverse term‑time and flexitime.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Orthoptics or equivalent.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council (HCPC).
- Full driving licence and access to a car for community clinics.
- Demonstrated experience working in an orthoptic department, preferably independently.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong communication skills with patients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Effective time‑management, prioritisation and ability to work under pressure.
- Self‑motivated, reliable and flexible.
- Manual dexterity and good hand‑eye coordination for orthoptic examinations.
- Empathetic and respectful approach to patients of all ages.
