Job Summary
Position: Children's Community Nurse (Grade NHS AfC: Band 5)
Location: Newton Drive Health Centre, Blackpool
Contract: 12‑month fixed term (0.76 cover for maternity leave), part‑time 28.5 hours per week (including evening and weekend).
Salary: £32,073 – £39,043 per annum, pro‑rated.
Working hours are flexible and may include before school, evenings and contribution to 24/7 palliative service.
The role is based in a small but well‑established service that supports children and young people aged 0–19 across home, school and community settings. The team is fully compliant with NMC Code and NHS standards.
Responsibilities
- Deliver clinical care, treatment and support to children and young people with identified nursing and long‑term health needs.
- Provide nursing care in home, school, respite and community settings across a seven‑day service (8 am – 9 pm).
- Facilitate early discharge, prevent hospital admissions or readmissions, and promote health outcomes.
- Work with education staff to develop care plans and train staff to meet the health needs of pupils.
- Lead implementation of evidence‑based practices and maintain NMC revalidation evidence.
- Support and supervise junior staff, including 1:1 and appraisal monitoring.
- Ensure all work is carried out in line with safeguarding, disability, and health and safety policies.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Registered Sick Children’s Nurse or Child‑branch qualification.
- Evidence of recent CPD relevant to current practice.
- Mandatory Medicine Management and BLS training.
Experience and Knowledge
- Post‑registration experience of at least 2 years.
- Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team.
- Proficiency in IT to document events, write minutes and disseminate information.
- Knowledge of safeguarding, disability and relevant NHS policies.
- Knowledge of health issues affecting children and young people with complex or life‑limited conditions.
- Experience with IV, CVL, IM interventions and management of naso‑gastric, gastrostomy and tracheostomy tubes.
Skills and Ability
- Excellent communication and listening skills across a variety of settings.
- Ability to promote individuality and well‑being of clients in a holistic way.
- Self‑directed, proactive and able to work independently for short periods.
- Competence in Microsoft Word, Publisher/Excel or equivalent.
- Ability to work flexibly to meet operational needs.
- Calm under pressure, resourceful, approachable, non‑judgemental, reliable and honest.
- Valid driver’s licence with independent transport for community visits.
- Strong organisational planning, assessment, implementation and evaluation of complex care packages.
Other Requirements
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required. Costs will be deducted from salary over 1–3 months, subject to the level of check.
Car driver with independent means of transport on a daily basis.
Eligibility to register for the DBS update service is encouraged.
