1. Job Purpose
To deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment across the Apprenticeship (Maritime Engineering) curriculum, with particular responsibility for supporting Small Vessel Chief Engineer provision.
The postholder will use current or recent marine engineering industry and examination experience to prepare apprentices and other learners for Maritime and Coastguard Agency written papers and oral examinations. The postholder will also contribute to electrical, electronic and control engineering teaching within the wider Maritime Engineering programme.
The appointment will provide additional specialist teaching capacity, support planned growth in Small Vessel Chief Engineer apprenticeship provision, and strengthen the quality and resilience of curriculum delivery.
2. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning

Plan, prepare and deliver high quality teaching across marine engineering subjects, with particular emphasis on Small Vessel Chief Engineer provision.

Deliver technical content associated with the relevant MCA written examination papers and oral examination requirements.

Teach electrical, electronic and control engineering subjects relevant to the Maritime Engineering curriculum.

Develop teaching materials, learning activities, technical exercises and examination preparation resources appropriate to the needs of apprentices and other maritime learners.

Use relevant practical and professional examples to connect theoretical engineering principles with their application aboard small vessels and other marine installations.

Adapt teaching methods to meet different learner needs, levels of experience and starting points.

Support learners in developing the technical knowledge, professional confidence and examination technique required for external maritime examinations.
Assessment and Learner Progress

Assess learners’ knowledge, skills and competence in accordance with programme, awarding body, apprenticeship and College requirements.

Provide clear, accurate and constructive feedback that enables learners to improve their technical understanding and performance.

Monitor learner progress and identify learners requiring additional support or intervention.

Prepare learners for MCA written papers and oral examinations through focused teaching, technical questioning, revision activities and appropriate examination practice.

Curriculum Development

Contribute specialist marine engineering expertise to curriculum planning, development and review.

Advise curriculum colleagues on developments affecting Small Vessel Chief Engineer education and examination preparation.

3. Particular Requirements of the Role
The postholder will need to:
- Work flexibly within a casual bank arrangement, with teaching hours aligned to programme timetables, learner requirements and examination cycles.
- Take responsibility for agreed areas of Small Vessel Chief Engineer delivery.
- Support preparation for both written and oral MCA examinations.
- Contribute to electrical, electronic and control engineering delivery where required.
- Work collaboratively with existing Maritime Engineering staff to provide continuity and specialist curriculum coverage.
- Maintain professional credibility through current or recent marine engineering, seagoing or maritime examination experience.

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Professional Competence
- Maritime and Coastguard Agency marine engineering certification.
- A senior marine engineering qualification appropriate to the level and subject matter being delivered.

Professional Experience
- Recent seagoing, marine engineering or professional maritime examination experience.

Additional Information
The College is seeking an individual with the technical competence and recent professional experience required to strengthen its Small Vessel Chief Engineer provision. The role is intended to provide additional capacity for new and existing cohorts while improving specialist examination preparation and supporting electrical and electronic engineering delivery.
The casual bank arrangement will allow teaching hours to be matched to curriculum requirements and examination cycles. The indicative 0.4 FTE allocation is intended to provide sufficient continuity for the postholder to take ownership of specified areas of delivery and learner preparation.
The Role
Fleetwood Nautical College, part of the Blackpool and The Fylde College group and one of the UK's leading centres for maritime education and training, is seeking an experienced Casual Bank Lecturer in Marine Engineering to join our growing Maritime Engineering team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering our Small Vessel Chief Engineer (SVCE) provision, preparing apprentices and cadets for their MCA written examinations and oral assessments, and supporting teaching in electrical and electronic engineering. You will hold a Class 1 Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency, or equivalent seagoing management level experience, and bring a strong understanding of marine engineering systems alongside a genuine passion for developing the next generation of seafarers.
A teaching qualification or Advance HE Fellowship would be desirable, although we will support the right candidate to achieve this.
