The role is being offered by a modern boutique private hospital in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The hospital serves the population of South Yorkshire and beyond, and is easily accessed via train, M1 and M18. Free parking is provided.

Facilities at the hospital include 21 inpatient beds, disabled-friendly rooms, 2 laminar flow operating theatres and 3 consultation rooms. The hospital offers the most up to date surgical treatments combined with a warm welcome and a professional and caring service from our nursing team. The hospital specialises in the areas of orthopaedics, cosmetic surgery, and women's health, but also undertakes general surgery.

The hospital seeks a full time Theatre Nurse Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) to work in their busy theatres. The Theatre ODP plays a key role in delivering safe, high-quality peri-operative care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. Working as part of the theatre team, the ODP will provide skilled support across anaesthetics, scrub, and recovery (as competent), ensuring patient safety, comfort, and excellent clinical outcomes in line with regulatory and professional standards.

You will work as a member of the multi-disciplinary theatre team providing a high standard of nursing care and safety for patients within the theatre unit. In addition to this, you will also actively contribute to the maintenance of an environment that is conducive to the delivery and promotion of a high standard of patient care. The post holder will adhere to professional and national standards and work in a patient-focused way, delivering a service that is safe, effective and efficient.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Anaesthetic, Scrub & Recovery Practice: Provide safe and effective assistance to the anaesthetist during induction, maintenance, and emergence of anaesthesia. Prepare and check anaesthetic equipment, drugs, and monitoring devices in accordance with policy. Support patients in the recovery area, monitoring physiological parameters and escalating concerns appropriately. Assist with the safe positioning, preparation, and transfer of patients throughout the peri-operative pathway.
  • Patient Care and Safety: Deliver patient-centred care, maintaining dignity, privacy, and respect at all times. Conduct and support safety checks including WHO surgical safety checklist. Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and maintain aseptic technique. Actively participate in incident reporting, risk management, and learning from events. Safeguard vulnerable adults and children in line with legislation and hospital policy.
  • Theatre Preparation and Equipment: Prepare operating theatres to a high standard prior to procedures. Ensure all equipment is checked, maintained, and available for lists. Support stock control, equipment tracking, and reporting of faults. Assist in cleaning and resetting theatres between cases.
  • Governance & Compliance: Practice in line with HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics. Comply with hospital policies, procedures, and CQC regulations. Participate in audits, service improvement, and clinical governance activities. Maintain up-to-date mandatory training and CPD requirements.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Work collaboratively with consultants, anaesthetists, nurses, and wider MDTs. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and colleagues. Support junior staff, students, and new starters. Escalate clinical or operational concerns appropriately.
  • Professional Development: Maintain HCPC registration and CPD portfolio. Engage in appraisal, supervision, and reflective practice. Develop competencies across multiple theatre areas where appropriate.

PERSON ATTRIBUTES:

  • Essential: Registered Operating Department Practitioner with valid HCPC registration. Recent peri-operative experience within an operating theatre environment. Competence in at least one of the peri-operative roles (anaesthetics, scrub, or recovery). Strong understanding of patient safety and infection control. Flexible approach to working hours.
  • Desirable: Experience in a private hospital setting. Competence across all three peri-operative areas. Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification. Experience supporting elective surgical lists.

WHAT'S ON OFFER:

  • Gross annual salary: between £32,000 to £38,000 (depending on experience and designation).
  • Working hours: 38-40 hours per week, across 5 days.
