Building Services | Senior and Principal Level Opportunities

Working arrangements to be discussed

Competitive package, dependent on experience

Are you an experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer looking for more ownership, more variety and the opportunity to genuinely influence the projects you deliver?

We're working with an established multidisciplinary engineering and design consultancy in Portsmouth that's looking to strengthen its Mechanical Building Services team.

This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer who enjoys the technical side of design but also wants to take responsibility for projects, work closely with clients and play an important part in developing the wider engineering team.

Whether you're already operating at Senior or Principal level, we're interested in what you can bring to the business.

The Role

You'll take a leading role in delivering mechanical building services design projects, from understanding the initial client brief and developing concepts through to detailed design, construction coordination and project completion.

You'll have the freedom to contribute your own technical ideas, challenge designs where appropriate and work alongside colleagues across other engineering disciplines to deliver practical, coordinated solutions.

It's a varied position combining hands-on engineering design, project leadership, client engagement and the opportunity to mentor less experienced engineers.

What makes this opportunity particularly interesting is the level of involvement you'll have throughout the project lifecycle, rather than being restricted to one stage of the design process.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Taking ownership of mechanical building services design projects from concept through to completion.
  • Producing and reviewing engineering calculations, layouts, specifications, technical reports and design documentation.
  • Leading the mechanical design process, ensuring designs meet client requirements, relevant standards and building regulations.
  • Working closely with clients to understand their objectives and provide practical technical advice.
  • Coordinating with electrical, structural, architectural and wider project teams.
  • Undertaking site surveys, attending project meetings and supporting construction-stage delivery.
  • Liaising with manufacturers and contractors to ensure appropriate technical solutions and equipment selection.
  • Contributing to project proposals, cost estimates and tender submissions.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior engineers, helping develop their technical knowledge and confidence.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve design quality, efficiency and building performance.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone with a strong technical background in mechanical building services design, ideally gained within a consultancy environment.

You’ll bring:

  • At least five years' experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong focus on building services design.
  • An HND or BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with CIBSE.
  • Experience managing and delivering design projects from initial concept through to completion.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical building services systems and current UK design standards.
  • Experience using IES VE, AutoCAD and NBS Chorus.
  • The ability to lead technical discussions, coordinate multidisciplinary designs and communicate confidently with clients.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring other engineers.
  • A full UK driving licence.

It would also be advantageous if you have experience in low-carbon design, thermal modelling, BREEAM or DREAM, alongside knowledge of Revit or MagiCAD.

Chartered Engineer status (CEng), or working towards it, would also be welcomed.

Previous security clearance or experience working on restricted projects would be beneficial, although this isn't essential. The ability to obtain UK security clearance is required

What's on Offer

  • The opportunity to lead and influence mechanical design projects from start to finish.
  • A varied technical workload within an established multidisciplinary consultancy.
  • Genuine client interaction and involvement in key project decisions.
  • The chance to mentor engineers and contribute to the development of the team.
  • Exposure to technically challenging projects and opportunities to broaden your experience.
  • A competitive package reflecting your skills, experience and level of responsibility.
  • The opportunity to develop your career at Senior or Principal level.
