A leading international engineering consultancy is seeking a Principal / Senior Public Health Engineer to join its growing Building Services team in London. This is a key leadership role for an experienced engineer with strong technical expertise in public health and process water systems, and a passion for delivering high-quality, sustainable design solutions across complex, multidisciplinary projects.

This position offers the chance to take a leading role in the design and delivery of public health engineering services across a diverse portfolio of sectors, including science, healthcare, data centres, commercial, and industrial environments. You will:

  • Lead end-to-end project delivery, from concept through to completion
  • Act as a technical authority within multidisciplinary teams
  • Drive excellence in process water and specialist public health systems
  • Collaborate with architects, sustainability consultants, and engineers across disciplines
  • Ensure projects are delivered to the highest standards of quality, sustainability, and efficiency

You will also play a critical role in strengthening technical capability within the team and supporting the organisation’s reputation in mission-critical and science-led environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and coordination of public health systems, including:
    • Domestic water services
    • Drainage systems (foul, trade, rainwater)
    • Gas systems
    • Process water systems (essential)
  • Contribute to specialist systems such as medical gas, fire suppression, and below-ground drainage
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers
  • Manage project delivery, including programme, budget, and resourcing
  • Support net zero carbon and sustainability goals across all design stages
  • Prepare fee proposals, contribute to bids, and engage in client-facing commercial discussions
  • Drive digital innovation, including use of BIM and automation tools

About You

We’re looking for candidates who bring a combination of technical excellence, leadership capability, and collaborative mindset:

  • Degree in Engineering, Building Services, or related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) with a recognised body (e.g. CIBSE, IMechE)
  • Strong experience in public health engineering design, particularly process water systems
  • Proven track record delivering complex, multidisciplinary projects
  • Experience in science, healthcare, or industrial sectors highly desirable
  • Strong understanding of UK regulations, codes, and sustainability frameworks (e.g. net zero, UN SDGs)
  • Proficiency in BIM tools such as Revit and AutoCAD
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and report writing skills
  • Experience managing teams, mentoring engineers, and overseeing project finances
