Job summary

1 x Service Manager (Clinical)

Band 8a | Work and Health Team | Birmingham, Wolverhampton and hybrid working

We are seeking an experienced registered healthcare professional to lead the clinical model for WorkWell, an early-intervention service supporting people whose health is placing their employment at risk, or who have recently left work because of ill health. You will make work as a health outcome central to delivery, ensuring participants receive evidence-based, person-centred assessment and coordinated support to remain in, return to or move towards good work.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-profile pilot programme supporting the interface between work and health, while working with partners across the health and care system to improve outcomes for people, communities and services.

What you will bring

You will be a registered nurse, mental health or learning disability nurse, or Allied Health Professional, with substantial specialist knowledge of vocational rehabilitation and experience of leading complex clinical service development across organisational boundaries. You will combine credible clinical leadership with strong programme delivery, analytical and influencing skills, and be able to translate evidence into practical pathways, standards and improvements. A commitment to reducing health inequalities, involving service users and working collaboratively across systems is essential.

Main duties of the job

Your key delivery objectives:

  • Establish the clinical model: develop a consistent cluster-wide multidisciplinary approach, including vocational rehabilitation and effective links with Occupational Health, primary care and community services.
  • Embed safe, high-quality practice: implement robust clinical governance, safeguarding, escalation, supervision, audit and continuous-improvement arrangements across all delivery partners.
  • Integrate pathways: position WorkWell within neighbourhood health teams and build clear referral and onward-support routes across health, employment, local authority, employer and VCSE services.
  • Deliver measurable outcomes: improve participant access, experience, wellbeing, work retention and return-to-work outcomes, using performance insight and feedback to address inequalities and improve the service.
  • Build clinical capability: coordinate training, provide specialist advice and strengthen confidence among clinicians and partners in work-focused conversations and interventions.
  • Provide delivery assurance: maintain grip on quality, activity, risk, milestones and resources; hold partners to account and ensure delivery remains on time, within budget and aligned to agreed standards.
