Your Opportunity: The OMB Tax Manager will play a key role in delivering high-quality compliance and advisory work to owner-managed businesses, with a strong emphasis on Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) matters. The role involves taking ownership of EIS compliance and advisory engagements, and acting as a trusted adviser to clients and a go-to EIS specialist within the firm. You will work closely with senior stakeholders to identify planning opportunities, ensure technical robustness, and help drive best practice and expand the EIS offering to new and existing clients.

How You’ll Make a Difference:

  • Compliance and client delivery: Focus on clients requiring EIS advice and assist with filing submissions to HMRC and general advice. Delegate work to more junior staff as appropriate. Review and prepare work to a good technical standard ahead of Director/Partner sign-off. Deal with client queries around qualifying criteria and spot and communicate potential eligibility issues. Spot opportunities to market the work to new clients and identify existing clients who could benefit from share schemes and awards. Actively manage WIP and reporting, feeding into senior team. Work closely with trainees and seniors to increase efficiency on jobs, taking responsibility for their work and development. Coach junior team members day-to-day on EIS technical knowledge, compliance processes and best practice. Share EIS and wider OMB technical knowledge across the team through informal coaching and knowledge sharing.
  • Advisory & Project Work: Identify tax planning opportunities and areas where clients would benefit from written advice or project work. Lead the scoping of advisory work, prepare fee estimates and monitor delivery and recovery. Draft and review advisory reports, clearances and technical memoranda following discussions with Directors or Partners. Support Directors and Partners in delivering advisory projects, contributing technical insight and commercial awareness. Assist with scoping, fee estimates and delivery of EIS advisory work.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Actively manage WIP and reporting, feeding into senior team. Work closely with trainees and seniors to increase efficiency on jobs, taking responsibility for their work and development. Coach junior team members day-to-day on EIS technical knowledge, compliance processes and best practice. Share EIS and wider OMB technical knowledge across the team through informal coaching and knowledge sharing. Support recruitment activity by identifying skills gaps and contributing to interview and selection processes.

Other attributes: Maintain technical knowledge: stay up to date with developments relevant to your department, demonstrate understanding of these in your work, and share learnings with the wider team. Appropriately apply risk management procedures and ensure junior team members are aware of these.

Additional: Complete the most complex returns, handle lots of technical aspects, conclude on technical points and make file notes to support decisions. Be proactive in organising upcoming work, think ahead and prepare for next steps. Ensure departmental budgets and new initiatives are followed and adhered to by junior members. Identify wider opportunities for work within the compliance review process, e.g. ERS reporting or BIK issues to review. Serve as a trusted first point of contact for clients’ issues and queries on individual jobs, ensuring their expectations are fully understood.

Project work: Spot tax planning opportunities or areas where clients should take detailed written advice and scope and quote for the work.

Team Management: Support senior team members in team management work: analyse team data and look for ways to make processes and work preparation more efficient. Identify gaps in the team and support managers with recruitment. Act as a role model for quality, behaviour and decision-making.

You’ll Be Ideal for This Role If You Have:

  • Qualifications: ACA or ATT qualified; CTA completed, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Core experience: Reviewing tax returns and managing compliance workflows. Experience working with owner-managed businesses. EIS-specific / Preferred. Strong hands-on experience with EIS compliance and advisory work. Involvement in EIS advance assurance applications, EIS3s, and investor reporting. Preparing or reviewing EIS-related technical analysis. Spotting EIS planning opportunities within wider compliance work.
  • Additional Experience: Preparing complex tax returns and using the group module. Writing sections for reports and clearances.
  • Skills & Attributes: Strong technical judgement and attention to detail. Confidence operating autonomously, with Director/Partner oversight where appropriate. Commercial awareness, including budgeting and recovery. Ability to lead, develop, and motivate junior team members. Strong organisational skills and proactive approach to managing deadlines and workload. Ability to build trust with clients and colleagues. Confidence challenging ideas and escalating issues appropriately. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in MS Office and relevant tax software.
