BJAK is building automation systems that help customers move through insurance journeys faster — from quote to policy issuance, renewals, endorsements and claims. We are looking for Backend Engineers who enjoy solving operational and workflow problems at scale, not just building isolated features. This role focuses on backend systems that power automation, reliability and operational efficiency across insurance workflows.

The Mission

Build backend systems that automate insurance operations and reduce manual processes across the customer journey.

What You’ll Own

  • Build backend services that support AI and workflow automation systems.
  • Automate quote generation, policy issuance, endorsements, renewals and claims follow-up logic.
  • Connect customer data, insurer requirements, internal operational tasks and status updates into scalable workflows.
  • Improve APIs, queues, retries, error handling and workflow observability.
  • Investigate production issues and resolve root causes.
  • Collaborate closely with product, operations, QA, frontend and DevOps teams.
  • Write maintainable and scalable backend systems designed for long-term growth.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience building backend systems in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of APIs, databases and distributed backend logic.
  • Comfortable debugging complex workflow and data-related issues.
  • Able to work closely with operational and business teams.
  • Good judgment around reliability, edge cases and maintainability.
  • Strong ownership mindset from problem identification through resolution.
  • Practical, collaborative and open to feedback.

The Kind of Builder We Want

  • Hands-on and detail-oriented.
  • Interested in automation and process optimisation.
  • Comfortable operating in fast-moving environments with evolving requirements.
  • Serious about reliability and engineering quality.
  • Motivated by operational impact and customer outcomes.

This Role Is Not For

  • Engineers who only prefer isolated feature development.
  • People who avoid debugging operational complexity.
  • People who overlook edge cases and failure handling.
  • People who require perfectly defined requirements before execution.
  • Engineers who are disconnected from business outcomes.

Success Looks Like

  • More operational workflows become automated end-to-end.
  • Backend failures and repetitive manual interventions are reduced.
  • Internal teams gain clearer visibility into workflow states and issues.
  • Customer follow-ups become faster and more reliable.
  • Your systems become trusted by product and operations stakeholders.

Interview Process

We assess candidates based on culture fit, problem-solving approach and backend engineering capability. The process includes an application review followed by multiple interview stages, including technical discussions and a backend problem-solving assessment.
