Heata is a groundbreaking clean-tech company using the waste heat from compute to heat homes, solving the twin challenges of data centre energy consumption and the decarbonisation of our energy system. Running on more sustainable and cost-effective infrastructure, our platform helps organisations reduce compute costs and their carbon footprint whilst supporting households with lower energy bills.
Working in partnership with SecureLinx and SUSE, we have established a robust technical, secure foundation using modern open-source, cloud-native technologies. Now we are ready to scale – expanding capability, automation and performance as we grow our client base, which comprises several enterprise customers and a long tail of smaller organisations.
If you want to build meaningful tech that sits at the cross-section of AI and impact, this role is for you.
The Role:
We are looking for a Platform Engineer with strong Kubernetes and ideally KubeVirt experience to help build out, harden and scale our infrastructure platform. Hands-on; you will work across the full lifecycle – from design and deployment through to automation, testing and ongoing optimisation. A central part of the role will be improving repeatability and security: enabling fast, automated, reliable deployments of distributed workloads to our growing fleet. You will collaborate closely with a small team, helping to shape the future of Heata's distributed compute platform.
Key Responsibilities:
- Architect, deploy and manage Kubernetes clusters, including virtual machine workloads via KubeVirt.
- Develop and maintain automated pipelines for build, deployment, configuration and testing.
- Use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration tooling (e.g. Terraform, Ansible, Helm) to deliver reproducible environments.
- Enhance the reliability and scalability of distributed systems running across a hybrid estate.
- Configure and secure infrastructure across major cloud providers (GCP, AWS, Azure).
- Contribute to platform observability, monitoring, performance tuning and optimisation.
- Work with SUSE's technology stack including Leap Micro, Uyuni, and SaltStack.
- Collaborate with internal and external technical partners to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Proficiency with IaC and configuration management tools (Terraform, Ansible, Helm, etc.).
- Experience managing and securing infrastructure on at least one major public cloud – ideally across GCP, AWS and Azure.
- Confident working with distributed systems and scalable architectures.
- Good grasp of Linux systems engineering and networking fundamentals.
- Exposure to KubeVirt highly desirable.
- Solid understanding of CI/CD and automation best practices.
- Experience deploying or managing highly distributed workloads.
- Passion for clean technology, sustainability, and socially responsible engineering.
- Comfortable working in a growing startup environment with autonomy and ownership.
At Heata, you will join a small, ambitious team building technology at the intersection of today's greatest challenges: climate change, AI infrastructure growth, power constraints and the cost of living. You will use your technical knowledge to turn cloud computing into a force for environmental and social good.
Culturally, we value creativity, ownership, and self-motivation, and we trust people to do their best work without unnecessary process, hierarchy, or micromanagement. You will take the lead on projects with innovative, forward-thinking customers on projects at the cutting edge of cloud computing and energy efficiency, helping shape a platform in its early stages and influencing core technical and product decisions.
This is an opportunity to build real, production systems with measurable climate impact – reusing waste heat from servers to reduce carbon emissions and deliver tangible benefits to communities. In return, we offer rapid learning, real responsibility, meaningful equity, and the chance to grow with the company as we scale – including the opportunity to take ownership of major systems and help define how the platform evolves.
Details:
- Participation in generous company options scheme.
- Part-Time / Contract also considered.
- Company Based in Godalming (GU7 1EY) adjacent to Station; Regular trains from Waterloo, also have desk space available in Waterloo.
- 10/15 minute drive from Guildford, parking available.
- Ideally would be based in the office, but can be hybrid or fully remote; depending on experience / independence; open to discussion.
