The City of Birmingham is seeking well-qualified, motivated Senior Planning Technicians responsible for coordinating and conducting complex planning studies involving collecting, processing, and interpreting land use, zoning, transportation, and related planning data. Incumbents in this job class review various drawings, maps, surveys, and applications for compliance with departmental requirements and ordinances. Such individuals also review applications for various licenses and permits for accuracy and compliance with requirements. Senior Planning Technicians act as a liaison to the community, contractors, businesses, etc.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: The City of Birmingham provides competitive pay and comprehensive benefits packages to include medical and dental insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plan (pension), generous paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, and more. The pay range for this job is presented below: $19.68 - $30.53
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position. Minimum qualifications are subject to change:
- Experience working with the public (e.g., explaining rules and regulations, laws, handling customer complaints).
- Experience interpreting maps, blueprints, and/or diagrams.
- Experience performing research through the use of computers, databases, and reference materials.
- Experience operating computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel) to format documents, and create and edit spreadsheets.
- Experience writing professional letters, documents, memos, and/or proposals.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Communicates with various individuals (e.g., contractors, realtors, engineers, developers, general public) on the phone and in person in order to answer questions and explain ordinances relating to flood plain, zoning, signage, and subdivision.
- Performs various administrative functions including coordinating communication between parties, and preparing and compiling information and documentation in order to prepare for meetings (e.g., Board of Zoning Adjustment, Planning Commission), to record and dictate board meetings, and to notify agencies and citizens of hearings, approvals, and recommendations to ensure information is communicated appropriately.
- Receives applications for licenses and permits and processes them by reviewing drawings, maps and surveys, researching historical data, collecting fees and ensuring compliance with departmental requirements and land development ordinances.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is conducted mostly indoors in an office setting, with periodic field visits to external indoor or outdoor locations. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
