The Birmingham Police Department is seeking APOSTC-certified law enforcement officers to serve as Part-Time Police Officers for special events. These part-time positions will primarily focus on providing police services for special events within the City of Birmingham, including but not limited to athletic events, concerts, festivals, and other large community-engagement events/activities. Part-time Police Officers are expected to enforce state and federal laws while maintaining a safe and secure environment for participants, citizens, and visitors. Part-Time Police Officers for special events are required to work a minimum of three events per year.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Compensation will be based on experience and may range from £25.33/hour to £37.43/hour. This part-time position is not eligible for health & wellness benefits, paid leave, or retirement pension.

Schedule: This is a part-time position with flexible hours, primarily working during special events. Shifts may vary based on event schedules and may include nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Part-time Officers must be able to commit to working a minimum of three (3) special events each year. Part-time Officers are limited to no more than 29 hours of work within a week. Examples of events are listed below:

  • The Magic City Classic
  • Birmingham Bowl
  • Steel City Jazz Festival
  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade
  • Veterans Day Parade
  • High School Athletic Events
  • Events located in Workforce Telestaff

UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT: The duty uniform and equipment for City of Birmingham Part-Time Police Officers shall be identical to that of active-duty Birmingham Police Officers. Part-time officers employed by an outside agency may wear their primary agency's departmental uniform with approval from their primary employing agency and will be issued a Birmingham Police Department radio.

MERIT SYSTEM: As a part-time position, employees do not accrue Regular Employee rights under the Personnel Board of Jefferson County Rules & Regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess an active law enforcement officer certification from the Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: The Birmingham Police Department strongly prefers candidates who are currently or have previously been employed by a law enforcement agency operating under the Personnel Board of Jefferson County (PBJC) Merit System. This experience is highly valued for its familiarity with the Merit System's structure, policies, and operational standards.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Event Security & Support: Assist with traffic, security, crowd control, access points, and overall safety at special events that occur within the Birmingham city limits (e.g., sporting and athletic events, concerts, festivals, parades, and other large events).
  • Enforcement of Laws: Provide full range of police services by enforcing laws and regulations.
  • City Facility Security & Support: Provide security support at police facilities, City of Birmingham facilities, and city meetings (i.e., City Council Meetings).
  • Patrolling: Conduct foot and vehicle patrols during events and other related activities.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergencies and calls for service during special events, providing appropriate assistance or coordination of resources.
  • Customer Service: Interact professionally with event attendees, workers, and security; providing support and addressing safety concerns.
  • Report Writing: Complete reports and maintain documentation as required for incidents that occur during events.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other police officers, security, and event coordinators to ensure the safety and security of all attendees.
