This post is for a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join the existing team of three Consultant Surgeons running the Congenital Cardiac Surgery service based in the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) and University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). The appointee will work collaboratively within the service to provide inpatient and outpatient care for congenital cardiac patients at these Trusts with responsibility for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure. The post aims to appoint an early career consultant surgeon with full mentoring of their practice within the initial period of appointment. There will also be a sessional commitment to the University Hospital Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) for the provision of the Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery service. The cardiothoracic unit provides adult cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure therapies and cardiopulmonary transplantation for the West Midlands and Wales. The unit is located in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Edgbaston.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota in the department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery for acute care and resuscitation of patients within the Trust, including cannulation for extracorporeal life support with availability on site within 20 minutes.
