Job Description:

General Responsibilities :

Install and maintain all the hardware and software required to allow SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) monitoring and control of the raw and finished water systems of BWWB. Provides mentoring and training to others within the department.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Design, install and program new telemetry and controls.
  • Creation of programs and graphical interfaces for user control and data output from the SCADA control system.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot problems in SCADA systems on a seven-day/24-hour on-call basis.
  • Installing new remote sites like DMAs (District Metering Areas) that help track flow throughout different gradients to help identify leaks and other problems.
  • Troubleshoot any issues interfering with a control system or communication operations at over 200 remote sites, five raw water pump stations, and four filter plants.
  • Designing panels that are powered by utility power or solar power. Partner in the constructing and installation of these panels with the help of E&M shop personnel. Programming the PLCs (Programmable Logic Control) and radios within these panels to track and send information.
  • Responsible for ensuring the correctness of our IESWTR (Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule) website and database. Also, responsible for making and notating any changes that might be necessary to this website and database and regenerating any reports involved.
  • Create graphics that are used in the graphical user interface. Create graphics used in the WebSCADA graphical user interface.
  • Responsible for creating new reports in response to criteria specified in award submissions (i.e., partnership for safe water). Also, responsible for creating narratives to explain the information we compile and generate.
  • Analyze operating trends and conditions and compile reports on findings.
  • Monitor SCADA operations of raw and finished systems.
  • Responsible for submitting orders into SAP, getting purchase order numbers, and placing orders. These orders could range from buying new equipment, ordering office supplies, or ordering replacement parts.
  • Review work, assign tasks, and train others.
  • Work with E&M Shop to maintain and troubleshoot issues throughout the system.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
  • Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures. Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management.

    Education:

    Associate degree in Computer Science or related field required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Certifications

    Valid Driver’s License requiredTraining in Distributive Control Systems preferredGrade 4 ADEM Water Treatment Plant Certification preferred

    Experience:

    Five (5) years of experience with control systems usage, basic computer programing, databases, and applications such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word required. Knowledge of water distribution systems, including pump operation and hydraulics. Basic knowledge of computer programming in different environments. Programming experience on various computer platforms, including DOS, Windows, and UNIX. Experience in water treatment with knowledge of chemical dosing and testing. Experience reading, understanding, and interrupting ADEM (Alabama Department of Environmental Management) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) regulations concerning water treatment, and the ability to create programs/scripts that develop reports that abide by these regulations.

    Programming various control logic, including DCS (Distributed Control System) systems, PLCs, wireless radios, and other control devices.

Experience with administrative functions of various Windows operating systems, including the ability to review and install updates. Knowledge of the raw water distribution process and the processes involved with water treatments. Experience performing high-level math relating to chemical dosing and compiling reports. Experience creating standard operating procedures and developing written guides to explain these procedures to others. Experience teaching a wide range of employees about using the SCADA system and reports relating to the system.
