Midland Mencap is looking for a warm, personable, and highly motivated individual to lead and support Children and Young People’s services across Birmingham, delivering safe, person‑centred activities for children with complex needs.
Responsibilities
- Lead and facilitate structured sessions and activities based on identified needs to meet desired outcomes of our children.
- Manage staffing rotas to ensure all sessions meet required legal ratios and staff skills match child and young person needs.
- Provide frontline support and leadership during sessions, and be part of the on‑call team to fulfil duties as outlined within business needs.
- Recruit, lead, manage, and support a team of support workers, including inductions, supervisions, and HR/training needs.
- Promote Midland Mencap services to children, young people, families, and potential referral agencies in statutory and voluntary sectors.
- Undertake, review, and ensure good quality risk assessments and person‑centred plans for children and young people engaging with the service.
- Initial investigation of complaints, disciplinary and grievance procedures for support staff.
- Participate in CQC, Ofsted and other regulatory inspections.
- Build and maintain good working relationships with multiple agencies such as social workers.
- Plan and manage working schedules, referrals and assessment processes.
- Identify and act upon safeguarding and child protection issues in multi‑agency contexts, ensuring compliance with guidelines, maintaining reports & records in a confidential and timely manner in line with policies, GDPR and safeguarding policies.
- Drive staff recruitment and children’s assessments.
- Adapt to the needs of Midland Mencap and child services.
Key Tasks
- Process and manage new referrals, conduct face‑to‑face assessments, complete children’s files, and liaise with professionals.
- Lead team meetings and resolve problems, creating strategies for service management.
- Participate in regular meetings with the Children and Young Persons Operational Manager and other colleagues.
- Adhere to and implement organisational policies and procedures.
- Plan, organise and facilitate weekly children’s sessions, including weekends and school holidays.
- Support implementing and run HAF sessions during school holidays.
- Complete monitoring for Birmingham services, reporting to line managers.
- Communicate effectively with staff, managers and professionals, keeping families informed.
- Attend training courses to develop knowledge and improve service quality.
- Perform any other tasks deemed appropriate within the job role.
Qualifications
- Experience of leading or managing a team of workers.
- Experience working with a range of learning disabilities, autism and caregivers.
- Understanding of Ofsted/CQC regulations.
- Good knowledge of safeguarding protocols.
- Willingness or ability to obtain a DBS check and sign up to a DBS update service.
- Experience delivering personal care and using hoists.
- Good knowledge of GDPR and storing personal information on database systems.
- Maintaining timely records.
- Connecting with individuals, groups and multi‑agency professionals.
Skills

- Relevant qualifications such as Pediatric First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Level 2/3 Childcare or Level 2/3 Health and Social Care.
