Birmingham Newman University is a rapidly expanding institution in Counselling, Psychotherapy & Talking Therapies. This role supports our PWP (Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner) training and related programmes.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide high‑quality teaching, learning and assessment in Counselling, Psychotherapy & Talking Therapies programmes.
- Lead, develop and deliver modules and programmes within the subject area.
- Write documentation related to the development and management of Talking Therapies training and counselling/psychotherapy programmes.
- Deliver training in line with professional statutory and regulatory body requirements such as BPS.
- Develop links with external agencies for placements and other work‑based learning.
- Liaise with external bodies, supervisors and examiners.
- Engage in student recruitment activities, including joint interviews with service delivery/clinical placement partners.
- Deliver research, enterprise activity and maintain a professional and research profile.
- Plan, manage and organise teaching on relevant programmes.
- Prepare, deliver and mark coursework, assignments and examinations; supervise dissertations and projects and provide tutorial guidance to students.
- Support academic, administrative and development activities of the Department.
- Lead module development, administration and contribute to course committees, annual reviews and assessment boards.
- Develop new modules and instructional materials to support student learning.
- Disseminate research results through peer‑reviewed articles, conference papers and books.
- Plan, organise and monitor own workload with minimal supervision to meet deadlines.
- Collaborate with teaching team and Department, sharing information and motivating staff and students.
- Ensure safety and fitness to practice for students on professional programmes.
- Show commitment to personal, teaching and subject development through the Annual Appraisal process.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of subject areas, professional developments and comply with accreditation requirements such as CPD.
- Supervise and provide support for student work‑based learning and placements; act as Academic Personal Tutor.
- Participate fully in recruitment activities as directed by Head of Subject and Associate Dean.
- Undertake additional duties consistent with the post and grade as set with Head of Subject.
Additional Responsibilities (Senior Lecturer level)
- Act as Programme Leader for the Counselling, Psychotherapy & Talking Therapies programmes.
- Manage and develop courses and curriculum.
- Prepare documentation for delivery and management of programmes.
- Lead tendering processes and bid submissions for commissioned provision.
- Maintain communication with external bodies and comply with their requirements.
- Develop contacts with external agencies for placements and learning opportunities.
- Lead programme validation and revalidation processes to ensure compliance with PSRB requirements.
- Exercise course leadership responsibilities, ensuring policies, staff induction, training and recording of absences.

- Cooperate with the University on all matters concerning health and safety and report unsafe conditions or equipment.
- When supervising staff or services, be responsible for their health, safety and welfare.

Essential Qualifications and Training
- PGCert in Low Intensity Psychological Therapy from a BPS accredited provider.
- Evidence of relevant professional experience in Talking Therapies (IAPT).
- Registered/Accredited status with a relevant body (BPS/BABCP).
- Masters degree or equivalent in psychology, counselling, psychotherapy or allied subject.
- Relevant teaching qualification.
- Doctorate in psychology, counselling, psychotherapy or related subject.
Desirable Qualifications and Training
- HiCBT qualification.
- HCPC accreditation.
- Qualification in clinical supervision – Talking Therapies.
- Experience of teaching/training.
- Theoretical and procedural knowledge of Low Intensity psychological therapy – PWP/CBT.
- Post‑qualification experience as a PWP within Talking Therapies service.
- Experience in module and programme coordination.
- Ability to undertake programme leadership and development.
- Evidence of scholarly/research activity and publications.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to use ICT to support teaching and learning.
- Commitment to teaching excellence.
- Capacity for team working.
- Ability to work on own initiative.
- Flexible approach to working hours and ability to prioritise competing demands.
