Birmingham Newman University invites applications for the position of Head of Subject Business Management within the School of Business and Law. This is a permanent, full‑time academic leadership post that provides academic and operational leadership for Business Management and related business provision at undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research levels.

Business Management is one of the School’s core academic areas and is central to our ambitions for sustainable growth, inclusive student success, employability, enterprise and regional engagement. The successful candidate will lead a team to deliver high‑quality, practice‑informed teaching and learning that remains current, distinctive and responsive to student demand, employer expectations and regional skills priorities.

Reporting to the Head of School (Associate Dean) Business and Law, the Head of Subject will provide visible leadership across programme delivery, curriculum enhancement, quality assurance, recruitment, conversion, retention, progression and graduate outcomes. You will work closely with programme leaders, academic colleagues, professional services and external partners to ensure coherent, well‑managed and student‑centred provision.

Responsibilities

  • Providing effective line management, workload planning, mentoring and staff development within the subject team.
  • Leading the continued enhancement of a coherent, competitive and sustainable Business Management portfolio.
  • Embedding employability, enterprise, sustainability, digital capability, inclusive learning and real‑world business practice across the curriculum.
  • Using data, student voice and external intelligence to drive timely enhancement and strengthen student success.
  • Supporting recruitment, conversion and retention activity.
  • Building relationships with employers, colleges, professional networks and regional organisations to strengthen recruitment pipelines, applied learning and graduate outcomes.
  • Overseeing academic standards, assessment practice, external examiner engagement, validation, revalidation and continuous monitoring activity.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • You will bring academic credibility in Business Management or a closely related discipline, together with a strong understanding of contemporary business and management education.
  • You will have experience of leading academic teams, developing and enhancing programmes, using data to inform improvement, and delivering positive outcomes in student recruitment, continuation, progression, employability or student experience.
  • A postgraduate qualification at Master’s level or equivalent in Business or a related discipline.
  • Experience of academic leadership, curriculum development, validation, revalidation, quality assurance and enhancement in higher education.
  • Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to inspire teams and represent the University externally.
