Birmingham Newman University is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Application Architect to lead the strategic direction, governance, and development of the University’s application estate. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the University’s digital future, ensuring our systems and integrations are secure, scalable, resilient, and aligned to institutional priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Application Team and act as the University’s design authority for application architecture.
- Oversee the development, integration, lifecycle management, and governance of a broad portfolio of enterprise applications and platforms, including SaaS solutions, web systems, databases, and integration services.
- Work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders across the University to deliver strategic application and integration roadmaps, reduce technical debt, improve service resilience, and support innovation.
- Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of the University’s data strategy and cyber security approach for application services.
Desired Experience
- Significant experience in application architecture, enterprise integration, and technical leadership within complex environments.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise architecture principles, system design, APIs, databases, and application security.
- Experience managing or leading technical teams and balancing operational delivery with strategic priorities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and influence decision-making at senior levels.
- Experience of working within ITIL-aligned environments, strong problem-solving capability, and a passion for technology and continuous improvement.
Working Conditions
This role is primarily campus-based at Birmingham Newman University and will require occasional evening and weekend work to support key operational activities and institutional priorities.
