Main Responsibilities

  • Provide practical, hands-on support to academic staff in designing, delivering, and evaluating digital learning experiences, including blended and fully online learning.
  • Act as business owner for Moodle, learner analytics platforms, and lecture capture systems, ensuring they meet academic needs and align with strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with academic colleagues to embed technology effectively into teaching and assessment, tailored to subject-specific contexts.
  • Develop and deliver training, guidance, and resources to build academic confidence and capability in digital tools and pedagogies.
  • Work with IT colleagues to support ongoing development, integration, and maintenance of learning technologies, ensuring functionality, usability, and accessibility.
  • Monitor system performance, gather user feedback, and identify opportunities for improvement in the digital learning environment.
  • Contribute to the development of institutional policies, standards, and strategies for digital education and technology-enhanced learning.
  • Stay current with sector trends and emerging technologies, assessing their relevance to institutional needs and supporting innovation through pilots and evaluations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Recognised teaching, learning, or technology-enhanced learning qualification (e.g., CMALT, PGCert, Advance HE Fellowship).
  • Knowledge of accessibility, usability, and inclusive practice in digital education design and delivery.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of embedding inclusive pedagogical principles and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in digital learning environments.
  • Knowledge and/or experience evaluating learning technologies to assess their appropriateness for teaching and learning contexts.

BCU is a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 30,000 students from more than 100 countries. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment. In this role, you will play a key part in delivering excellence in education, research, and sustainability.

Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from racially minoritised backgrounds. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking, those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets and potential.

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and to an environment that supports lawful free speech and academic freedom. We will continuously review and improve our policies, practices, and procedures to ensure that we are promoting these in all aspects of our operations. We believe that by working together, combining our many different backgrounds and life experiences, we will empower each other to reach our full potential.

The University is proudly Disability Confident. This means amongst other things that we commit to offering a guaranteed interview to disabled applicants who fully meet the essential criteria for each role.

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
