The Role
We’re looking for an experienced and forward-thinking educational leader to take on the role of Director of the Centre for Teaching Excellence at Birmingham City University. This is a key position within the University, offering the chance to influence and shape the future of teaching and learning on a university-wide scale. You’ll provide strategic leadership and day-to-day management of the Centre, ensuring that our approach to academic development, digital learning, and inclusive teaching is joined-up, evidence-based, and impactful. Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education), you will work closely with academic teams and professional services to support innovation, enhance teaching quality, and deliver the University\\\’s education priorities.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading the development and delivery of the University’s approach to teaching excellence and academic practice
- Managing a high-performing team, including the Senior Academic Development Manager and Senior Learning Technologist
- Advising senior leaders on teaching strategy, digital learning, and curriculum development
- Overseeing academic development programmes, teaching resources, and staff support
- Driving improvements in curriculum design, digital capabilities, inclusive teaching, assessment, and feedback
- Leading on the implementation and evolution of the University’s Education Strategy
- Representing the University in national and international education networks
- Encouraging a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across all aspects of learning and teaching
What We’re Looking For
You’ll be an experienced leader in higher education with a strong track record in academic development, teaching enhancement, or digital education. You’ll understand how to make change happen in a large, complex organisation and be confident working with senior stakeholders to shape and deliver strategic goals.
We’re Particularly Looking For Someone Who Can Bring
- Significant experience of leading educational development or digital learning initiatives at a strategic level
- A track record of delivering successful change across departments or institutions
- Expertise in inclusive curriculum design, pedagogy, and digital teaching practices
- Experience of supporting and influencing senior leadership on teaching and learning matters
- Strong people management and team leadership skills
- Principal Fellowship of Advance HE (or equivalent)
- Experience representing your institution in national or sector-wide education networks
- An understanding of policy developments and frameworks in UK higher education
