Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the city. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Thrive Tutor (learner developer) to join our newly formed Academic Skills Team within Library & Learning Resources. The role will suit someone from a library, learner developer, teaching or coaching background, who is passionate about helping students succeed and who has experience in delivering academic skills support.

Working as part of a small team aligned to our school of Law & Social Sciences, you will play a key role in supporting students\’ academic success and lifelong learning, building their confidence, through developing and delivering essential academic skills support.

As part of BCU\’s investment in the university’s Access & Participation Plan, our Thrive tutors provide tailored, embedded classroom support in alignment with our APP priorities to raise attainment amongst identified cohorts of learners.

Responsibilities

  • Delivering tailored and specialist support to students on a range of academic skills in collaboration with module teams
  • Delivering writing cafés, Q&As and 1:1 support to effectively support students with academic skills
  • Developing resources aligned with the subject area to encourage engagement from identified cohorts
  • Working closely with Academic Skills Managers and the wider academic skills team in your school to ensure alignment with course and subject requirements
  • Ensuring data collection for evaluation of targeted interventions

Experience and Qualifiers

  • Experience of delivering academic skills support
  • Experience in designing and delivering group workshops, 1-1 sessions, and online learning materials
  • Ability to work with and support students with varying learning needs in becoming independent learners
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and maintain accurate records of student progress
  • Dedication to promoting accessibility, student success, and continuous improvement in academic support services
