About Birmingham City University

At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.

Recognised as one of the UK’s Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.

Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.

By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.

Role Summary

At Birmingham City University, we are committed to delivering an outstanding, inclusive and transformative student experience. As part of Student and Academic Services, you will join a Directorate at the heart of an ambitious transformation programme, reshaping how we work to provide efficient, effective and student-centred services.

We are seeking a Student Induction and Community Officer to join the Student Induction and Community team within Student and Academic Services. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the journey of our students by supporting the delivery of an inclusive and engaging student induction, welcome experience and year‑round programme of community-building activities and cultural celebrations. Working collaboratively with colleagues across the University, the Students' Union and external partners, you will help create opportunities that foster student belonging, engagement and success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate allocated areas of the University's welcome and induction programme, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Support the planning and delivery of events and activities that form part of the year‑round student community programme.
  • Liaise with Schools and professional service departments to coordinate logistics and content for induction sessions and community events.
  • Work in partnership with the Students' Union to co‑create engaging, student-focused activities and campaigns.
  • Collect and analyse student feedback to support the continuous improvement of induction and student engagement activities.
  • Ensure accurate and timely communication of induction and event information to students across multiple channels.
  • Manage the administrative processes associated with events and activities, including bookings, room set‑up, materials, and guest coordination.
  • Support the promotion of induction and community events through a range of digital communication channels.
  • Assist with budget monitoring and procurement for assigned activities, ensuring value for money.
  • Represent the Student Induction & Community team at relevant working groups and project meetings as required.
  • Support wider University events, including enrolment, graduation, Open Days, and Clearing activities.
  • Experience of supporting the planning and delivery of events or student-facing activities.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to coordinate activities and achieve shared objectives.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of allocated tasks and use initiative.
  • Experience of working with diverse student, customer or client groups.
  • Experience of using digital systems and communication tools to promote and manage events.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality services.
  • Experience of working within a higher education or similar environment.
  • Understanding of the student lifecycle and the factors that influence the student experience.
  • Experience of working with Students' Unions, student representative groups or student-led organisations.
