About Birmingham City University

At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.

Recognised as one of the UK’s Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.

Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.

By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.

Role Summary

We are seeking an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Compliance Manager to join the School of Law and Social Sciences, leading the School’s regulatory compliance and monitoring activities for its ITT provision.

In this role, you will manage compliance processes and ensure adherence to Department for Education (DfE) ITT Quality Requirements and the Ofsted inspection framework. You will work closely with Professional Services, Academic Leads, Course Leads, Lead Mentors and School-based Partners to support high standards of regulatory compliance and successful outcomes for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) across the University’s ITT courses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate ITT compliance monitoring activities, ensuring regulatory requirements are met and processes and documentation remain effective.
  • Coordinate and prepare for Ofsted inspections and DfE audits, working with relevant professional services and operational teams to ensure timely completion of audit requirements.
  • Monitor QTS outcomes and performance data, identify and resolve compliance issues and risks, and report compliance to the School Management Team.
  • Provide training, guidance and handbooks for staff and Lead Mentors, liaise with the DfE and external sector organisations, and contribute to continuous improvement and strategic planning.
  • Experience of managing compliance within a regulated environment.
  • Strong understanding of the DfE ITT Quality Requirements and experience of preparing provision for Ofsted inspections, DfE audits or equivalent regulatory audits.
  • Experience of working effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders, with strong analytical, communication and organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience working within higher education and/or initial teacher training provision.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance frameworks related to ITT.
  • Familiarity with ITT courses, programmes and routes.
