We are looking for an experienced Gardener / Horticulturalist to join our Estates and Facilities Team. This is a hands-on, varied role, maintaining and enhancing the university’s outdoor spaces to keep them safe, attractive, and welcoming for staff, students, and visitors. You will apply your horticultural skills across a variety of landscapes, gardens, and green spaces.
Responsibilities
- Maintain gardens, borders, terraces, and other outdoor areas across campus using horticultural techniques
- Planting, pruning, turf care, and general horticultural maintenance
- Treat moss, weeds, and algae; sweep and litter-pick to keep areas clean and presentable
- Operate gardening machinery including mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, leaf blowers, and ride-on equipment
- Drive university vehicles and trailers for grounds maintenance tasks
- Respond to adverse weather conditions, clearing snow and ice to ensure safe pathways and evacuation points
- Store and maintain horticultural equipment safely and carry out daily checks
- Support biodiversity initiatives and assist with the opening of new buildings or campus developments
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience in horticulture, grounds maintenance, or a similar gardening role
- Vocational qualification such as NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture (or equivalent)
- Clean, current driving licence; experience with larger vehicles or towing trailers desirable (training provided)
- Good literacy and numeracy skills
- Basic IT skills for emails and university systems
- Strong teamwork, flexibility, and willingness to work across multiple sites
