We are looking for an experienced Gardener / Horticulturalist to join our Estates and Facilities Team. This is a hands-on, varied role, maintaining and enhancing the university’s outdoor spaces to keep them safe, attractive, and welcoming for staff, students, and visitors. You will apply your horticultural skills across a variety of landscapes, gardens, and green spaces.

Responsibilities

• Maintain gardens, borders, terraces, and other outdoor areas across campus using horticultural techniques
• Planting, pruning, turf care, and general horticultural maintenance
• Treat moss, weeds, and algae; sweep and litter-pick to keep areas clean and presentable
• Operate gardening machinery including mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, leaf blowers, and ride-on equipment
• Drive university vehicles and trailers for grounds maintenance tasks
• Respond to adverse weather conditions, clearing snow and ice to ensure safe pathways and evacuation points
• Store and maintain horticultural equipment safely and carry out daily checks
• Support biodiversity initiatives and assist with the opening of new buildings or campus developments

Person Specification

Essential

• Experience in horticulture, grounds maintenance, or a similar gardening role
• Vocational qualification such as NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture (or equivalent)
• Clean, current driving licence; experience with larger vehicles or towing trailers desirable (training provided)
• Good literacy and numeracy skills
• Basic IT skills for emails and university systems
• Strong teamwork, flexibility, and willingness to work across multiple sites

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
