Birmingham City Women’s Football Club is on the rise. With an incredible history dating back to 1875, Birmingham City Football Club is part of an exciting period of accelerated growth and modernisation, playing its part in a once-in-a-generation opportunity to support the transformation of England’s second city as part of the Sports Quarter project. With significant investment across our football, commercial, and community operations, we are rebuilding the Club for long-term success — on and off the pitch.
The Women’s Performance Services Department plays a central role in supporting the development, health and performance of players across the Club’s women’s pathway. Working collaboratively across an interdisciplinary team including sport science, medical, psychology, analysis and nutrition, the department is committed to creating a high-performance environment that enables players to thrive both on and off the pitch. Our approach balances elite performance with player wellbeing, ensuring that athletes are supported holistically throughout their development journey.
This role will support the psychological development and wellbeing of players across the women’s pathway, helping to build the mental skills, resilience and performance behaviours required in elite sport. Working within a high-performance environment, the successful candidate will embed psychological practice into the daily routines of players and staff, supporting both individual and team performance. Key responsibilities will include:
- Delivering evidence-based psychological and wellbeing support to players across the pathway.
- Developing and delivering a psycho-social curriculum for players, coaches and parents/carers.
- Providing one-to-one support to players where required.
- Supporting the development and delivery of the Academy Wellbeing Strategy.
- Contributing to multidisciplinary team discussions to address performance and wellbeing needs.
- Supporting player transitions, including movement into the first team, loan placements or transitions away from the club.
- Promoting a positive, high-performance culture that prioritises both wellbeing and performance outcomes.
- Maintaining accurate, confidential and up-to-date records in line with professional standards and safeguarding policies.
We are looking for an experienced and motivated practitioner who is passionate about supporting the development of female athletes within elite sport. Essential qualifications include:
- MSc in Sport Psychology, Psychology or equivalent.
- HCPC registered psychologist or actively working toward registration (e.g. BPS Stage Two or CASES SEPAR – evidence of supervisory relationship required).
- Experience delivering applied performance psychology in elite or high-performance environments, ideally with female athletes.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trust with players and staff.
- Experience designing, delivering and evaluating psychological interventions in sport settings.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to organisational culture.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Experience working within professional women’s football or other elite female sport environments.
- Qualifications or training in counselling or coaching psychology skills.
- Understanding of long-term athlete development in female populations.
- Experience delivering workshops, education sessions or mentoring athletes and coaches.
Personal attributes should include:
- Proactive, hands-on and adaptable approach.
- High levels of integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Passion for supporting both performance and player wellbeing.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced high-performance environment.
