We are seeking an experienced and authoritative audit professional to lead one of the Council's Internal Audit teams. As Group Auditor, you will play a key role in providing independent assurance across the Council and its associated organisations, supporting strong governance, risk management and internal control. You will lead high-profile audits and investigations, manage and develop audit staff, and contribute to the strategic leadership of the Internal Audit function as a member of the Audit Management Team.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead, manage and direct an Internal Audit team delivering audits across Council services and associated bodies.
  • Plan, prioritise and allocate audit work, ensuring delivery of the approved audit plan to quality and performance standards.
  • Lead complex, high-profile audits, investigations and corporate projects.
  • Review and approve audit reports, ensuring robust conclusions and practical recommendations.
  • Contribute to the strategic management and continuous improvement of the Internal Audit service.
  • Maintain strong relationships with Directorates, senior leaders and external bodies, promoting a customer-focused approach.
  • Represent Internal Audit at committees, hearings, tribunals and external forums as required.

About You

You will be a confident leader with strong professional judgement, extensive audit experience and the ability to influence at senior levels.

You Will Have

  • A recognised professional qualification (e.g. CIPFA, CCAB, IIA, MBA or equivalent with management content).
  • Significant experience managing audit teams and delivering audit plans in a complex organisation.
  • Strong background in public sector audit and/or accounting, with knowledge of governance and control frameworks.
  • Experience applying professional audit standards while constructively challenging established practice.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, including reporting to senior leaders and committees.
  • Strong decision-making skills, exercising independent judgement in high-risk or sensitive situations.
  • Sound knowledge of IT systems and their application within an audit environment.
