Birmingham Children's Trust has just launched its new Family Help Service which is a bold, relationship‑centred, early‑help model designed to ensure children and families receive the right support at the right time. This is a pivotal moment for the Trust as we reshape how families experience help, reducing escalation, strengthening resilience, and creating a truly accessible offer that empowers communities.

We are now seeking an exceptional Head of Service to lead this exciting new vision in East Birmingham, joining colleagues in our Front Door Service. This is a rare opportunity to shape a service from the ground up bringing passion and strategic leadership to a model focused on prevention, partnership working, and whole‑family support. You'll promote a culture that is strengths‑based and inclusive, ensuring our teams build meaningful relationships with families and respond swiftly to emerging needs.

As Head of Service, you will:

  • Be responsible for Team Managers delivering a range of Services including Sec 17, Child protection response and early help.
  • Lead and develop a high‑performing multidisciplinary Family Help workforce, including domestic abuse, harm outside the home, mental health etc.
  • Drive consistent, high‑quality practice that keeps children at the heart of everything we do.
  • Build strong partnerships across education, health, voluntary sector organisations and communities.
  • Embed a service that reduces demand on statutory intervention by helping families earlier, more effectively, and more collaboratively.
  • Shape strategic development, influence system-wide improvement, and ensure that every family's experience of our service is positive and empowering.

About you:

  • A qualified social worker, registered with Social Work England, with substantial experience in children's services.
  • A confident and inspiring leader, able to motivate multidisciplinary teams and drive high‑quality, relationship‑based practice.
  • Proven experience in service development and improvement, ideally within early help, safeguarding, or family support.
  • Skilled in building strong partnerships across agencies, communities, and the voluntary sector to deliver better outcomes.
  • Resilient, strategic, and committed to ensuring children and families receive timely, effective, and accessible support.

We have been rated as 'Good' by Ofsted, following a 2023 inspection. This is a fantastic achievement for Birmingham Children's Trust, with many positive highlights focusing on areas including the quality of staff leadership, partnership working, safeguarding and corporate parenting.

This is a hybrid role based in Birmingham so you must reside within a suitable commutable distance around Birmingham and have the correct right-to-work documents to work in the UK. Sadly, we do not support those who require sponsorship.
