We’re hiring a Senior Full Stack Engineer at Birl. At Birl, we’re building the future of returns for e-commerce. Our mission is simple: make returns effortless for shoppers, valuable for brands, and better for the planet. We’re a small, ambitious startup tackling a problem that touches millions of online purchases every day. There’s a lot to build, plenty of unknowns, and huge opportunity ahead. If you enjoy ownership, moving fast, and figuring things out as you go, you’ll feel very at home here. Now is a brilliant time to join as we scale our platform, deepen our Shopify integrations, and work towards becoming the go-to global returns solution.
The role: We’re looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join us as an early technical hire. You’ll work closely with the founders and the wider team to build and evolve Birl’s core product, from customer-facing returns flows to merchant dashboards and backend services. This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You’ll help shape technical decisions, influence how we build, and ship things that customers actually use.
What you’ll be doing:
- Designing, building and shipping features across the full stack.
- Creating high-quality customer and merchant experiences using React.
- Building and maintaining backend services and APIs in Node.js.
- Integrating deeply with e-commerce platforms, particularly Shopify.
- Working with GCP to ensure our systems are scalable, reliable and secure.
- Owning features end to end, from early ideas through to launch and iteration.
- Helping establish sensible engineering practices as the team and codebase grow.
What we’re looking for:
- Strong experience working full stack with JavaScript - React (Next.js) and Node.js.
- Solid experience in e-commerce, including platform integrations such as Shopify.
- Senior-level judgement and the ability to make pragmatic technical decisions.
- Comfort working in a small startup with ambiguity, changing priorities and incomplete information.
- A scrappy, get-things-done mindset balanced with care for quality and maintainability.
- Someone who enjoys ownership and takes pride in seeing things through.
- Startup experience is a big plus, but not essential if you thrive in fast-moving environments.
Why Birl? High impact role with genuine ownership from day one. Small team, no layers, and lots of influence. Meaningful work at the intersection of e-commerce and sustainability. Big ambition, fast learning, and plenty of room to grow with the company.
Stages: Drop us an email with your CV at hello@wearebirl.com with the subject: "Birl" to show you’ve at least read this part of the job description. Initial 15 min chat with a member of our team. A 30-45 min session with one of our engineers. Meet one (or both) of our founders. We aim to get back to you within a few days no matter which stage you’re at!
Compensation: £75-90k (depending on experience). Location: Hybrid (London-based).
Disclaimer: We’re currently not working with any recruiters. If you’re excited by early-stage energy, enjoy solving real problems, and want to help shape a product and team from the inside, we’d love to hear from you.
