Overview
As Union Director, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for BBKSU, guiding policy, governance, and financial oversight to advance students’ interests. You’ll partner with elected Officers and the Board of Trustees to deliver priorities and meaningful student outcomes. You will shape organisational planning, risk management and people development, while strengthening partnerships within Birkbeck and with external allies. You drive democratic engagement and ensure student voice informs decisions, at a small, impact-driven organisation.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for BBKSU, aligning with trustees and student officers
- Oversee organisational planning, finance, governance, risk, and compliance
- Develop and support elected officers and student representatives to fulfil democratic mandates
- Build strong relationships with senior colleagues across Birkbeck and external partners
- Identify opportunities for partnership, fundraising and organisational development
- Navigate between strategic thinking and practical problem-solving in a small organisation
Key requirements
- Senior leader with a track record of leading teams and delivering organisational strategy
- Experience in finance, governance, risk and compliance
- Ability to work with Boards and senior stakeholders
