Overview

In this role you will ensure the safe, efficient operation of research laboratories and equipment to support both research and teaching in the School of Natural Sciences.

You will train and supervise researchers and students, design and manage lab projects, and uphold health, safety and sustainability standards.

You’ll maintain facilities, procure supplies, and keep accurate inventories while enabling practical classes and shaping lab policies.

This is a hands-on leadership role in a dynamic academic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe and efficient running of laboratory facilities and equipment for lab users
  • Provide inductions, training, supervision and guidance on techniques, equipment and software
  • Work independently and with researchers/students to design, plan and manage lab projects
  • Maintain facilities to high standards: operation, organization, maintenance and cleanliness
  • Procure equipment, consumables, chemicals and reagents with accurate record-keeping
  • Collaborate with academic staff to develop and deliver practical classes and set lab policies and priorities
  • Key requirements
  • Ph D or equivalent in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or closely related subject
  • In-depth knowledge and up-to-date practical experience of biochemistry, molecular biology and protein purification methods
  • Experience working in a scientific environment with collaborative ethos
  • Experience as a lab manager or in a similar leadership role
  • Ability to plan, manage and coordinate lab activities within health, safety, sustainability and financial requirements
