Lecturer in Computer Science

We are seeking a Lecturer in Computer Science on a permanent, full-time, teaching-focussed contract, to join Birkbeck's School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. Our School offers a successful range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Computer Science, Data Science and Mathematics, including postgraduate programmes offered through the University of London’s Worldwide programme, and our internationally leading research is organised in three themes – Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms, Data Science and AI, and Logical Methods.

Birkbeck’s established partnership with University of London Worldwide, specifically the online MSc Computer Science, is a key aspect of this role. Responsibility for the overall academic content, delivery and associated administrative processes of this programme, including convening several of its modules which require strong programming skills in Python and Java, form a major part of the workload.

In addition, as a core member of our academic staff you will also contribute to the full range of activities within the School including a strong working culture, academic administration, knowledge transfer, and public engagement. As part of the Faculty of Science, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in your field, and you will play a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual future of our diverse student cohort, teaching across our courses and contributing to our exciting research culture and environment, situated in the heart of London's historic Bloomsbury area.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in contemporary Computer Science, the ability to collaborate on educational provision with other colleagues in the School, online teaching experience at Higher Education level in Computer Science, and a commitment to maintain currency of Computer Science knowledge and skills through scholarship or research.

Main responsibilities will be to:

• Teach and inspire students across various settings, from small tutorials to large lectures
• Develop and deliver engaging teaching materials and methods, and convene modules
• Supervise student projects and provide academic guidance
• Engage in research activities and contribute to the school's research objectives
• Participate in outreach and engagement activities to enhance public understanding of your discipline and/or contribute to School administration and management.

As Lecturer you will:

• Have postgraduate research experience and hold a PhD or equivalent in Computer Science
• Have experience in teaching and leading modules at the undergraduate or postgraduate level
• Have thorough knowledge of different types of teaching methods and strategies appropriate to Computer Science, including online/distance-learning methods
• Have effective communication and presentation skills
• Show a commitment to diversity and the ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds.
