Birkbeck, University of London, is looking for a User Services Assistant to work this Summer 2026 on a permanent, part‑time contract.
Responsibilities
- The User Services Assistant plays a key role in providing a high‑quality IT and Library customer‑focused service while working at the service desk and responding to online and in‑person enquiries.
- They will be involved in students’ induction and orientation, and carry out communication and marketing activities including social media and the creation and maintenance of user guides.
Qualifications
- Previous experience of working in a public‑facing role and as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Commitment to the provision of excellent customer service to library users.
Training and Development
Birkbeck offers training and will expect the postholder to develop knowledge in areas such as WiFi, printing, access to College platforms (e.g. Moodle), resources, membership, library facilities and study environment.
Working Hours and Rota
Part‑time schedule: either 12 hours or 18 hours per week. Hours are covered in a team rota: Monday and Tuesday 6 pm to midnight; Thursday, Friday and Saturday 6 pm to midnight. Rota 1: 12 hours (0.34 FTE, £9,691–£10,612 per annum). Rota 2: 18 hours (0.51 FTE, £14,536–£15,929 per annum). This is a fully in‑person role with no option for home working.
Salary and Benefits
Pro‑rated £28,502 rising to £31,234 per annum, FTE, Grade 3 of the College's London Pay Scale, including a consolidated Weighting/Allowance for staff with a normal contractual place of work in the London area. Additional benefits include a competitive salary and pension scheme, 31 days paid leave and generous benefits in the HE sector.
